Discussion Assignment 1
A sustainable food system is the ideal way to maintain food sustainability.
This however is a collective effort where one individually must act
accordingly to create a meaningful impact (Zimmerman. et al 2012). The
ten steps advised are practical and provide ways to achieve and
contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly food system
with individual efforts applied. There are several ways in which I have
already contributed to this aspect and others which I can apply to
contribute to building a sustainable food system in my community.
The market is the right place for me to get food. I understand the type of
food that I and my family need and then also, I love to have a relationship
with the person that is making it possible for this food to be available in
the market. The farmers are key to this sustainable food system in the
community because they are the local providers of the food. By
purchasing directly from them, I contribute to the growth of the regional
economy and reduce the waste of perishable foods in transport while also,
I advocate for less carbon footprint that parades with food distribution.
In my country alone, there is a wide range of transportation for animals.
This sweeps through all regions of the country because the central
business district does not have this availability. In my contribution to the
sustainable food system, I mostly consume plant foods. These are low in
carbon and facilitate a sustainable environment as compared to the
animals whose process of consumption entails transportation,
slaughtering, packaging and refrigeration. This is a process that promotes
danger to the environment where plant foods survive. In this aspect, the
local agricultural progress is improved as purchases are made within the
provisions of the region in which I reside.
I love vegetables. I was taught how to plant them when my mother took us
to the garden while on holiday. There is a need to spare land for reasons
that help us preserve its quality and texture. Hence, home gardening is a
practice that I believe is helping preserve land and space for biodiversity
while the availability of the vegetables I plant at home, makes a
sustainable food system possible because other people in the community
can buy what I would have bought from the market and this makes
availability of food a guarantee.
Because the foods I consume with my family are more plant-based, and
with the fact that we also have a mini garden, Composting food is a
practice. By doing this, I create nutrients that help the soil gain its richness
and have the ability to produce good food for the community. This might
seem a small contribution but it is a consistent practice that will pass on to
generation
One of the leading things that people consume is water. There is a lot of
bottled water and there are more companies that are still growing through
this business venture. Choosing tap water over bottled water is ideal and
effective to reduce plastic waste and the environmental impact associated
with bottled water production and transportation.
Packed foods do not apply much on my shopping list. By choosing
products with eco-friendly packaging or buying in bulk, I minimise the
environmental impact of excessive packaging waste.
How I intend to contribute to a sustainable food system.
As an Individual, it might be a little challenging to fully take responsibility
in all aspects that contribute to a sustainable food system however, being
a part of health campaigns as well as advising my peers on how to eat
healthy would be a good step at Contributing to a sustainable. Supporting
local farmers at all levels is also another way of contributing to this cause.
The other thing is, boiling drinking water at my home rather than buying
bottled water.
In summary, The Ten Steps You Can Take to Help Build a Sustainable Food
System in Your Community," are a guide to creating a more sustainable
and resilient food system. This is information that can help make a positive
impact both in my immediate community and the rest of the world out
there.
