HPRS 2231: What Should I Know About a Disaster? When working in a healthcare setting, you should know your role during a disaster. What is the Disaster Management Plan for your healthcare setting? Are you considered essential personnel? Depending on the disaster and its severity, you may encounter the following: Be deployed to a different area of the healthcare facility. Work at a Mobile Surgical unit. Work with federal and volunteer agencies. You may have to work longer shifts or a shift different from your own. For this assignment you will work in groups of 3. There are 9 items that need to be addressed on this worksheet. You may divide them up as you see fit. The team will work on this together to produce one document. Each member of the team who contributed will upload the same document. Please add all contributors’ names to the worksheet. You cannot complete this assignment by yourself. Failure to engage with your group will earn you a zero (0) for this assignment. There is a group contract associated with this assignment. It lists things like division of labor, how to communicate with each other, and deadlines. Please fill this out and submit it by the due date as it is part of your grade. If a member of your team is not responding to any communication, send a message to the student and copy your instructor. The team will still have to complete all 9 items, but the other teammate will earn a zero (0). You cannot complete this assignment on your own . If you turn in the assignment by yourself, it is an automatic zero. Item Response Where are the fire extinguishers located in the Paramount building? Name 2 locations and be specific . Where exactly are the fire extinguishers located? I found one extinguisher on the 1st floor next tto the water fountains and men bathroom when you come in the door the Market st entrance. The other extinguisher I found was allocated on the 1st floor by the testing center rroom# P112. Where would you find an emergency eyewash station at ECC/Paramount? Be specific . Where exactly are the emergency eyewash stations located? Eye wash station should be inside the surgical suite, but I was unable to get inside due to the doors were locked Research a hospital in the Dallas area. How would you activate the emergency protocol system? For example, if there was a fire in your area, how would you make everyone aware of this issue? Leslie: If there was a fire in my area at Baylor Scott & White hospital in Irving, to activate the emergency protocol system I would first pull the fire alarm. The fire alarm would notify everyone in the building that there is a fire. White flashing lights would be turning on and
off in all rooms and hallways while the alarm keeps going until the fire fighters arrive to find the fire and put it off. Through the speakers it will keep repeating lines that say something along the lines off, “Please listen. There is a fire reported in the building. Please stay where you are at if the area looks safe and stay calm. Someone will tell you where to exit if needed to be moved and will come help you, do not panic and wait for help.” Until the fire is put out the patients and visitors will be able to go back into the building. When the power at a hospital goes out, the emergency generators are activated. How long will the generator last? In other words, how long will it be able to supply power to the hospital? This will depend on the size of the generator. List the type of generator and the approximate time the generator should last. Jen: The CEO of the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council, Eric Epley, said that all hospitals in Texas are required to have emergency generators that run power for 96 hours. Hospitals typically use diesel or natural gas generators. A full tank of diesel fuel can maintain power for an entire hospital for about 8 hours. Depending on the size of the hospital and the amount of fuel stored on site, these types of generators can maintain power for at least 24 hours. Hospitals are required to keep enough backup fuel on-site to run the facility for 96 hours. If you had to evacuate patients, what would be the order of evacuation? You have semi-ambulatory, ambulatory, and non- ambulatory patients. Leslie: First of all, the first people to be evacuated would be patients who are in an area where it is the most dangerous. For example if there was a fire, patients with the most damger of getting caught in it would be evacuated first all ambulatory and non- ambulatory. After they are evacuated, next would be the ambulatory patients in the areas nearby where the fire could potentially spread. In a calm and safe manner the patients who are able to walk by themselves would be shown the exits to leave as they do mot need extra help. Next would be semi- ambulatory patiens with asidtants to leave the area to a safe place. Lastly, non-ambulatory patients will be assisted by healthcare workers to the safer area with cautious. If necessary, which disaster shelters could be set up nearby? List one (1). Jen: One option is the Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Service.
List two (2) volunteer agencies that could assist healthcare facilities in a disaster. The Salvation Army and The American Red Cross What is the protocol for moving patients to a different facility? You must choose a specific healthcare facility. Jen: At Methodist Dallas Medical Center, one-call rapid patient transfers are available. Transfer nurses take calls and determine which patients require a higher level of care and transfer them (auto-accept policy). It is mandatory to obtain and document patient consent prior to the transfer. Select a possible disaster that could happen in Dallas, TX. Which federal agency would the hospital likely contact? Provide a URL of this agency that list the services they offer.. Leslie : A possible disaster that could happen in Dallas Texas is a tornado. We have gotten lots of warnings for tornadoes many times every year, but thankfully never happen. However, there is always a possibility that it could and if it does we need to be prepared to take shelter and have help from others. A federal agency that the hospital most likely would contact is the Texas Health and Human Services Commision. https://www.hhs.texas.gov/services/disaster- assistance/receiving-disaster- assistance#:~:text=The%20U.S.%20Federal %20Emergency%20Management,gives %20this%20type%20of%20help .
