Summary of Earthquakes hazards in Utah
a.
What specific earthquake hazards pose a major threat to you and your family in Ogden
City?
-
Landslides: Earthquakes can trigger landslides, especially in hilly or mountainous
areas. These can bury homes and block roads, isolating communities. The hilly
areas of Ogden, particularly those with steep slopes, are most at risk. Eastern,
mountainside, a few areas in the city and south ogden.
-
Surface Rupture: this occurs when the ground physically breaks due to the
movement of the earth’s crust. It can damage buildings, roads, pipelines, and other
infrastructure. The eastern part of Ogden, near the mountains, is at greatest risk
due to its proximity to the Wasatch fault.
2.
Hazard assessment
a.
With regard to earthquakes, where do you think is the safest place to live in Ogden and why?
-
I think that the safest place to live in Ogden would be South ogden. Although
South Ogden is still susceptible to landslides and flooding, it will be the least
affected by those hazards. While there are landslide spots in South Ogden, there
are a lot of other places where landslides can be avoided.
ii. Observe / evaluate what area(s) in Ogden have the smallest and largest risk.
-
The regions west of Ogden are more vulnerable to liquefaction and ground
shaking. It is virtually nonexistent closer to the mountains and less common
within the city of Ogden. For obvious reasons, areas nearer mountains are more
likely to experience flooding, debris flows, and landslides. These risks become
almost nonexistent as one moves farther out, unless a pipe bursts.
Iii. Write a paragraph or two that describe the geographic area(s) that appear to be the safest from
earthquake hazards and include what hazards still exist in the areas.
-
The hazard maps show that downtown Ogden seems to be a safer place in terms
of earthquake hazards. Still, there are still some obvious seismic risks in
Downtown Ogden, such as crumbling buildings. Even though it indicates that
ground shaking isn't very common in this area, structures may still be slightly
affected, which could result in hazards and other issues down the road. As I
previously indicated, South Ogden is arguably the safest place, but because it is a
more hilly area, it is still susceptible to flooding and landslides.
Iv. Write a sentence or two explaining WHY you concluded this
location/these locations are the safest.
-
Because ground shaking is the primary cause of structural damage, which is
ultimately the most dangerous aspect of earthquakes and results in the greatest
number of casualties, I came to the conclusion that these locations are the safest.
Therefore, safer areas are those that are less vulnerable to these things.
3.
Earthquake mitigation of financial loss
a.What is the cost of earthquake insurance in Ogden?
And would you purchase it,considering the hazards and recurrence interval of large earthquakes
(M >= 6.5)along the Wasatch Front?
-
The cost of insurance can range from $350 to $1400 a year. The price of the
policy will be dependent on the size of the home and property, as well as the
construction materials the home is made with. Another factor to be aware of is
that the deductible for earthquake insurance tends to be higher, anywhere from
5-25%. So, you could pay a lot out of pocket.
-
The risk in Ogden is kind of high, so for me and my family I think it would be a
wise decision to purchase the insurance. Especially because you want to get as
much covered as you can. and if there is a lot of damage the less we can pay out
of pocket the better, even if it is a small amount. We have experienced floods and
had no insurance to cover the cost of the damages, so that I would not want to
make the mistake again.
