Q. A lab group is working on a Lab about the physical properties of minerals. A student is testing for the hardness of a mineral using a thin glass plate. While holding the glass plate in his hand and trying to scratch it with the sample the glass breaks and cuts the student’s hand. Another student uses hydrochloric acid to test for the presence of calcite she accidentally spills some acid on the table and hand. A third student is working with a mineral sample and is sure that it is halite (rock salt). To test for halite (salt) he tastes the sample. Discuss the (many) problems this lab group encountered while completing the mineral tests. -safety hazards -inappropriate testing methods -chemical exposure -Unreliable and unsafe identification methods Q. How would your lab group have done the procedures differently to make this a safer Lab'? To make the lab safer, the group should: Provide safety training and follow protocols. Use appropriate mineral testing tools. Avoid unsafe methods like tasting minerals or using inappropriate chemicals. Handle chemicals properly and clean up spills promptly. Be prepared to respond to accidents and injuries. Q. If you were part of this lab group dealing with these problems how would you handle each of the "accidents” as they occurred? If I were part of the lab group, I would: Provide immediate first aid for the cut hand and report the incident. Evacuate the area and follow protocols for cleaning up the acid spill. Interrupt the student from tasting the mineral and educate about the hazards involved in such actions. Q. Directions: Identify the inappropriate safety procedure in each cartoon. The man is pointing the rubber band to his face. They are making him smell or taste the acid or chemical.
