PHS 111
Lab #2 ( Earth Materials: Minerals)
Purpose:
-To learn how to identify minerals by their physical properties by performing virtual scientific tests on virtual mineral samples.
-To learn basic terms used to identify samples.
Procedure:
Mineral Identification:
1.
Go to this website (Used with permission of Dr. Richard Hardwood):
http://profharwood.x10host.com/GEOL101/Labs/Minerals/index.htm
Read and study the discussion of minerals and their physical properties and the mineral physical properties chart.
2.
Keep the Mineral identification –diagnostic physical properties chart handy and go to Select a Sample
(at the bottom of the page).
2 (rev 5.24.2023)
3.
Select a sample to identify; you will have 20
samples to work through.
4.
When you click on #1 you will be taken to a new page that has a picture of a mineral to identify and below that picture are the tests that you will perform (see sample below). You should also see, just below the picture, a chart to keep up with your findings.
As you move from sample #1 to sample #20, you will need to perform the listed physical property tests (see the next screen shot). Record your observations in the chart given and before you move to the next sample you will need to try and name the mineral by clicking on the name in the Mineral Name table. Compare your findings with those in the Mineral Identification diagnostic physical properties chart to help you identify each sample.
3 (rev 5.24.2023)
5.
Please use the chart on page 4 of the lab to keep a record of the minerals you have correctly identified (with their respective sample number) and the physical characteristics
that you have identified; [if you i.d. a sample as sulfur and it was your sample #4 please record #4 – sulfur as well as the properties].
6.
To get credit for this lab remember to go back into the chapter 22 module in blackboard and look for the tab labeled Lab #2 Quiz and be sure to take that quiz by the due date.
