1. Introduction
Earthquakes are considered one of the most catastrophic natural phenomena on Earth, often causing numerous casualties as well as significant damage. In October of 2020, an earthquake occurred in the eastern Aegean Sea, located between the Greek Islands and Turkey. As a result, many nearby cities were affected by the seismic event, most notably, Izmir Turkey.
1.1 Earthquakes
The Earths crust is made up of many tectonic plates, more specifically, 7 major and 8 minor plates.

These plates are in constant, but slow, motion above the molten mantle located below it. This motion, especially considering a more complex tectonic region, can often lead to the tectonic plates getting stuck, resulting in friction and a release of energy that we know as an earthquake.

If enough energy is released, other catastrophic events, such as tsunamis, landslides and volcanic eruptions may follow.
2. The 2020 Samos Earthquake

The epicenter of the earthquake – the location on the surface directly above where the earthquake started – was 9 kilometers off the northern shore of Samos Island. Greece. The

earthquake began due to the movement westward of the Anatolian block and the southern retreat of the trench and Hellenic subduction zone.

This movement caused violent shaking of the surrounding area, with a recorded moment magnitude of Mw6.9. Consequently, a tsunami formed, the largest in the Eastern Mediterranean since 1956, and affected the coastal Aegean cities in Turkey and Samos Island. The tsunami reached a maximum height of 3.8 meters and travelled as far as 2,490 meters inland in some areas.
