Name :
Scientific method and Introduction to Geology
The scientific method
is a series of steps followed by scientific investigators to answer
specific questions about the natural world. The steps of the scientific method are as
Observation, Question, Hypothesis, Experiment, Results, Conclusion.
1)
Explain the term “science” in your own words. (2 pts)
Science is an observation that explains the basic rules of nature 2)
Make your own observations about something around you. It could be something in
your house that is happening, something you see outside your window, something
you remember seeing on campus. For each observation, write a hypothesis about
WHY the thing you observed happened. Finally, write and explanation of how you
would test your hypothesis. Please do this for three observations and fill in the table.
(9 pts)
Observation
Hypothesis (why the thing
you observed happened)
How would you test the
hypothesis
Classmates not attending

students in the regular
class when the weather is
fine and do the same for
when the weather is not
great. Then, I will analyze
if there is a shift in class
size and conclude my
study. Plant of the same species
being different length, one
in direct sun and not in
direct sun. Plants in sunlight grow
taller compared to plants
without sunlight I would grow plants of the
same specie with the same
water e.t.c.one plant next
to the sun, other away
from it and both plants will
be analyzed and I will
conclude my study after Blue light helping plants
grow
Blue lights does not have
any effect on plant growth I will get the same plant
and they will have the
same control variables ,
one will be exposed to blue
light 3)
What is an example of something you have heard at some point in your life that is a
hypothesis but was presented to you as a theory? (2 pts)
It would be pluto being a planet.
4)
What is one scientific law you learned in high school or in any other science class?
(2 pt). I learnt about newton’s first law of motion which states that an object at rest
remains at rest and an object in motion remains in motion
5)
This graph shows the weather on GSU campus from May 11, 2020. What was the
temperature at 9 am? Make sure to include units! (2 pts)
It is about 55-56 Fahrenheit 6)
Does this graph represent observations or hypotheses? Why? (4 pts)
I would say observation because of the precipitation, temperature, and the wind speed
for one day. 7)
Using that same graph, make two more observations about the weather that day. (2
pts)
There is a spike in wind gusts around 10am, from 0mph to 24mph within an hour(9am-
10am).

8)
Now, here is the weather from April 29, 2020. What do you observe was different from
this day than May 11
th
? What is a hypothesis that would explain these observations?
How would you test that hypothesis? (6 pts)
I observed that from April 29
th
, 2020, there was no precipitation and the wind speeds
peaked on may 11
th
. One hypothesis could mean that as the wind gust increase. There
is a higher chance of precipitation to occur. I would test it by analyzing levels of
precipitation and measuring the wind gusts on some days.
Now let’s look into some basic math problems.
9)
A car travels 5 miles in 20 minutes. How fast was it traveling (in miles/min) (2 pts)
It was traveling about 0.25 miles/min 10)How fast was it traveling (in mph) (2 pt)
It was traveling 15 mph
11)A car was traveling at 60 mph for 30 minutes. How far did it travel, in km? (3 pts)
It travelled 48.3 km 12)A stick is 0.5 m long. How long is it in inches? (2 pts)
It should be around 19.7 inches 13)A rock has a surface area of 3 in
2
. What is the surface area in cm
2
? Remember: in
2
= in*in and both units need to be converted. (4 pts)
The surface area is 19.35 cm ^2 Introduction to Geology
Geology is the science that deals with the earth's physical structure and substance, its
history, and the processes that act on it.
14) Is the earth a dynamic system? If so, explain why in your own words.
I believe the earth is dynamic system because it has its own component, and they work
together to make the earth what it is. 15) Listed below are general things we use/find in everyday life. Can you think of ways
geology has affected for the construction, destruction, usage, or behavior of these
items?
Item
How geology has affected for the
construction, destruction, usage, or
behavior of the item
Pencil
Graphite, the mineral is composed with
carbon elements and is found on the
surface of the earth. It is mixed with fine
clay. Fossil fuel
They are created from the remaining
parts of pre-historic animals. They are
used for many aspects of human survival
and pose big problems for the state of the
earth. The ancient city of Pompeii
Pompei was buried by the volcano that
erupted over the ancient city. It is proof of
how the earth can do as it pleases, and
one cannot predict the many changes it
can bring, Atlanta subway system
It is buried amongst rock underground,
and it compressed for an easier finding of
routes, as the surface of the city of
Atlanta is congested
Lake Lanier
It is a man-made reservoir that is affected
by geology. it is home to many animals
and also acts a water source for local
areas.

16) What major do you study? How do you think geology and your major are
connected?
I study computer science and I believe geology is connected with my major by using it
for data analysis to study geological phenomena.
