1.) Explain, in your own words, how metamorphic rocks form. It's important here to focus on what
happens to the minerals during metamorphism. [Hint: there's more here to say than just "heat and
pressure".]
Part 1 (3 pts):
In a few sentences each, respond to the questions or prompts below. Use complete sentences and
appropriate grammar.
Metamorphic rocks form when rocks change without melting. This change happens because of three
things: heat, pressure (from the weight of rocks above and Earth's movements), and special fluids. These
factors cause the rocks to transform, creating metamorphic rocks.
2.) Explain, in your own words, and show the two main categories of metamorphic rock texture. To
show this, draw a small sketch that illustrates each type of texture, and include a photo of one of
your samples that represents each texture. Organize and label the drawings and photos so it clear
which is which. The two main categories of metamorphic rocks are foliated and non-foliated.
Foliated metamorphic rocks form when minerals line up in layers, similar to the look of pages in a book.
The different minerals align in layered patterns due to directed stress during metamorphism.
Non-foliated metamorphic rocks do not have aligned minerals. They are typically composed of a single
mineral. When they undergo metamorphism, the crystals grow together without a specific pattern.
Part 2 (5 pts):
Select 5 of your metamorphic rocks (MET rocks only!). Construct a clear and organized table to
record the following information about these rocks. The rocks (with their names) should be on the
rows, and the following information should be on the columns. Label the columns. Determine the
texture of each of the metamorphic rocks. Explain the specific features/properties that allow you to
determine the texture. Your reasoning and evidence is most important here. Based on each rock's
texture, speculate as to which type of metamorphic process produced each rock. Again, your
reasoning and evidence is most important here. Include photos of at least your rocks #1-3. Metamorphic Rocks ID Lab

A foliated metamorphic rock that appears to be made of previous igneous minerals, some felsic, some
mafic.
A foliated, and possibly lineated, metamorphic rock, of unknown protolith.
A non-foliated metamorphic rock, of unknown protolith. Part 3 (6 pts):
Go outside and find 3 rocks that match the metamorphic rock properties below. The rocks you find
do not necessarily have to metamorphic (though this is not difficult near Tucson), but they at least
have to appear to have the same properties. For your Part 3 rocks #1-3, take clear digital photos of
your samples and add them to your document after the table. Label each photo with the
corresponding metamorphic properties. Metamorphic Rocks ID Lab
