[Last Name] 1 Natalie Perez DeLeon Dr. Judkins GEOL 100-1001 October 10 th , 2021 Exercise 2: Flooding 1. Does homeowners insurance cover flood damage? No 2. Can you buy flood insurance if you live in a flood zone? Yes 3. What does it mean when they refer to a 100 year flood? How is this flood different from a 10 year flood? A 100 year flood is a flood that has a 1% chance of occurring every year. This is different from a 10 year flood because 10 year floods have a 10% chance of occurring every year. A 100 year flood is also deeper and far more destructive. 4. If a 100 year flood occurred 50 years ago, are you safe for another 50 years and therefore do not need to purchase flood insurance? Explain why or why not. No you are not safe for another 50 years and still need to purchase flood insurance. This is the Gambler’s Fallacy. 5. What is the chance of a 50 year flood during 50 years of time? How does this chance change as the time period gets shorter? It has a 64% chance of occurring. As “Period of time” gets shorter, the chances of one decrease. As “Flood level” gets shorter, it increases. 6. What is the NFIP and what service does the NFIP provide?
