Volcanoes & Earthquakes Homework As with all homework assignments, you will be evaluated using the R.E.A.L. rubric. Cite ALL the sources you used for this homework. You have been exploring the process of science, which looks for underlying order (theories) as evidenced by raw data. One step in this process is to collect raw data, then analyze it to identify patterns. Here’s another chance to construct science for yourself! A. Refer to and use the World Map provided on the last page of this packet B. Label the following using a paint or draw program, or simply print it out and use colored pencils or pens: 1. all continents – I have labeled North and South America for you 2. the Aleutian Islands 3. the Kamchatka peninsula, which is part of Russia 4. the Kuril islands, parts of which are claimed by both Russia and Japan 5. Create a key that defines the colors for volcanic activity, earthquake activity, and tectonic plate movement (3 different colors) C. Refer to the image https://msnucleus.org/membership/html/k-6/pt/plate/5/images/plate01_.gif Observe where the volcanic activity is mostly happening. Sketch them on your map D. Refer to the image that displays the 20 largest earthquakes in the world along with many others Draw this pattern on your map (again use a different color than the plate movement and volcanic pattern data) https://www.tonymappedit.com/mapped-20-largest-earthquakes-in-the-world/ E. The Earth’s crust is composed of plates that move in relation to each other (see the map by the United States Geological Survey at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plate_tectonics#/media/File:Plates_tect2_en.svg or Tarbuck & Lutgens (2015) Figure 7.12. Draw the arrows on your map (Make the arrow a different color than your volcano data and they are facing the same direction as what you see in the image). F. Answer the following sentences in complete sentences as if you are restating the question : 1. Collecting raw data (Independent Research) : Record the date of occurrence, magnitude, and location. 1) Identify the 5 most recent earthquakes in your area. Feb 9 th , 2023, 2.6 magnitude, Chincoteague VA Oct 12 th , 2022, 2.0 magnitude, Sykesville MD Apr 12 th , 2022, 2.4 magnitude, Ashland VA Aug 15 th , 2021, 1.7 magnitude, Woodlawn MD Aug 4 th , 2021, 2.1 magnitude, Highland MD
2) Identify the 10 most recent earthquakes. Oct 3 rd 2023, 2.6m, Toms Place CA Oct 3 rd , 3.3m, Franklin AZ Oct 3 rd , 2.7m, Liborio Negron Torres PR Oct 3 rd 3.3m, Rotan TX Oct 3 rd , 2.8m, Coast of Oregon Oct 3 rd , 2.6m, Puerto Rico region Oct 2 nd , 2.7m, Guanica, PR Oct 2 nd , 2.7m, La Pargiera PR Oct 2 nd , 3.0m, Maria Antonia PR Oct 2 nd , 2.9, PR region 3) Identify the 10 most intense earthquakes in the last century. 10. Apr 11 th , 2021, 8.6m, Indian Ocean 9. Aug 15 th , 1950, 8.6m, Xiznag-India Border 8. Feb 4 th , 1965, 8.7m, Rats Island, AK 7. Jan 31 st , 1906, 8.8m, Ecuador-Colombia Border 6. Feb 27 th , 2010, 8.8m, Maule Chile 5. Nov 4 th , 1952, 9.0m, Kamchatka Russia 4. Mar 11 th , 2011, 9.1m, Tohoku Japan 3. Dec 26 th , 2004, 9.1m, Sumatra Indonesia 2. March 27 th , 1964, 9.2m, Prince William Sound, AK 1.May 22 nd , 1960, 9.5m, Valdivia Chile 2. Using the 10 most recent earthquakes (range: 2000 to current) create a table that shows the following data: date of occurrence, intensity, number of fatalities, location (do not just say the country/continent. Be specific such as inland, coastal etc. Date of Occurrence Time (UTC) Intensity Number of fatalities Location Oct 3 rd , 2023 4:33pm 2.6 0 10km SSW of Toms Place, CA Oct 3rd, 2023 1:15pm 3.3 0 3km WSW of Franklin, AZ Oct 3 rd , 2023 11:11am 2.7 0 5km SW of Liborio Negron Torres, PR Oct 3 rd , 2023 6:06am 3.3 0 17km WSW of Rotan TX Oct 3 rd , 2023 4:30am 2.8 0 143km W of Pistol River, OR Oct 3 rd , 2023 12:32am 2.6 0 Puerto Rico Region Oct 2 nd , 2023 11:36pm 2.7 0 8km WSW of Guanica, PR Oct 2 nd , 2023 11:27pm 2.7 0 7km ESE of La Parguera, PR Oct 2 nd , 2023 10:51pm 3.0 0 7km SE of Maria Antonia, PR Oct 2 nd , 2023 8:38pm 2.9 0 Puerto Rico Region
3. Where do you see most of the volcanic activity occurring in the world? What patterns do you observe? Most volcanic activity is happening at borders of tectonic plates but also in the same areas I drew the arrows for the movement of those plates. 4. Where do you see most of the earthquake activity occurring in the world? What patterns do you observe? Earthquakes are also happening right at the borders of those tectonic plates and in similar areas as the volcanic activity. It also seems that these major earthquakes were at convergent boundaries. 5. Do you see a similar pattern between the earthquake and volcanic activity? Why do you think that is? Yes the earthquakes and volcanic activity both happen at boundaries of tectonic plates. This is because the movement of said tectonic plates is what causes the natural disasters. 6. As you placed the arrows from the tectonic plate image onto your map, did you see a pattern of where these arrows are in relation to your other data The arrows of the tectonic plates movement was in the same areas of the earthquakes and volcanic activity. 7. Summarize: Describe the relationship between the location of the volcanic and earthquake activity to the tectonic plate data. Knowing what you know about tectonic plate movement and what causes volcanoes and earthquakes, draw a conclusion about why you saw this pattern on your map. When the tectonic plates move around and shift it effects the ground and elements above them. This is evident in the additions I added to the mad because you can see that the earthquakes and volcanic activity all happens at these boundaries. Convergent, divergent and transform boundaries all account for the different effects the movements have on earths surface. G. Submit your written responses and your scanned image of your map.
