Mariah Lutteke Geography Video Assignment #2 Cynthia Miller September 23, 2021 I watched: - Madeleine Leininger’s Theory of Cultural Care Diversity and Universality - Nurturing Cultural Competence in Nursing: Promising Practices for Education and Healthcare - Incompetent vs. Competent Cultural Care I am currently going to school for nursing. Geography plays a huge role in this career. In the video about Leininger’s theory, she mentions how she worked at a children's guidance home. In this home, there were many cultures of children that she got to work with. A lot of the expectations were different from the parents she stated. Culture is a complex concept. It includes many things like peoples beliefs, behaviors, values, and just the way they go about understanding the world. Cultural awareness requires us to step back and look at ourselves as if through a stranger's eyes and open the opportunities of the different ways of doing things. Health professionals play a key role in determining the nature of interactions and patient experiences when accessing health care. Cultural and linguistic differences between healthcare providers and health service users can result in significant miscommunication. As for me, I am pursuing the path of going into the medical field. There are all different responses you will get from patients in regards to illnesses, and treatment. In the Nurturing Cultural Competence video, they mentioned that we need to add cultural diversity to our workforce. To make that happen, we need to make our nursing education and practice sites more culturally sensitive. Having a strong workforce is a key part in everything we do. They stated the purpose of increasing cultural confidence, will improve the care that clients and families receive.
Culturally incompetent care refers to someone who doesn’t fully understand a situation or somones background. They may not have the full knowledge of that individual. Some examples would be if a patient has had cupping, coining, or acupuncture. These are all cultural practices. Competent care is when someone understands the cultural background of the patient. Healthcare providers strive to develop a multicultural orientation to deliver culturally sensitive care and improve communication. Cultural competence significantly benefits healthcare organizations and patients alike. It results in more patient participation and engagement, fostering respect and improved understanding. One of the most important elements emphasized in pursuit of competent cultural care is identifying your own beliefs and culture before caring for others. Promoting cultural competence can present challenges. For culturally sensitive care you need to be aware of what's going on, avoid making assumptions, take time to learn about other cultures, overcome language barriers, practice active listening skills, and educate patients about medical practices.
