Assignment #10
1) What was your personal consumptive water use (measured in module 3)?
My personal consumptive water use on day 1 was 39.55 gallons and on day 2 it was 45.2
gallons. My average personal consumptive water use would have been 42.375 gallons.
2) Why do you think that was different than the "Daily Water Consumption by Human for
Personal Needs" calculation from the module 5 water footprint?
It was different from the “Daily Water Consumption by Human for Personal Needs”
because other factors such as water levels in meat, poultry, and transportation affected the overall
accuracy of the calculation.
3) What was your daily water footprint (Total Water Consumed) in gallons from Module 5?
My Total Water Consumed was 1240.614 gallons.
4) How does your daily water footprint compare to the class?
My water footprint seems to be below average compared to the class.
a) Why do you think your water footprint is different than other members of the class?
My water footprint may be different from other members of the class due to many
factors. The first main factor that I am assuming plays into this situation is the amount of meat
and poultry I consume. I typically don’t eat a lot of meat and chicken which is why my overall
water footprint might be lower. Additionally, the amount of traveling I do may also have an
impact on my footprint as well as the amount of time I take to shower/leave the faucet running.
b) What are the things you might do to improve your water sustainability?
I can improve my water sustainability by making sure to not use water sparingly. This
means making sure to turn off the faucet when I’m brushing my teeth or washing the dishes.
Taking shorter showers can also contribute to improving my water sustainability as well as
making sure that there are no leaks on my property that could be wasting water.
5) How does your daily water footprint compare to that compare to a country that you can
identify with (see examples below)?
My daily water footprint seems to most closely compare with Denmark and Australia.
Based on the data, they seem to have a daily water footprint of around 1,200 to 1,300 gallons. In
comparison to all the other countries, they seem to have the closest water footprint to mine of
1240.614 gallons.
6) Do you think that you will be able to make a difference in the water footprint of anyone
else? (Explain your answer- 1 paragraph minimum)
I think that it is very possible to make a difference in someone else’s water footprint. By
taking my prior knowledge about water and everything that I have learned in this class, it would
not be difficult for me to educate a friend or loved one on how to improve their water usage so
that they can help impact the water crisis positively instead of negatively. The only thing needed
is for the person to have an open mind and a little bit of compassion considering that helping
conserve water can help people who don’t have access to it at all. Informing them about small
changes that they can make in their everyday routines such as taking shorter showers or turning
the faucet off while brushing their teeth can make a huge difference in their water footprint.
