2.
Take a precursory look at your map. What features can you see? Are there mountains,
rivers, highways? Provide a brief description of what you think the terrain might look
like.
Please use the 3-Point Rubric as a guide for how to appropriately respond to this
question.
After taking a precursory look at the map I chose, of Conyers, Georgia, I
feel as if I can see the actual satellite version of this map. I noticed a pattern in
features that described the area for me. I observed that there were multiple state
routes and an interstate. Also, in the map I chose, there is a county borderline.
Examining each side of the border I saw that on the Rockdale County side of the
border I saw that one both sides, the north of each side had more local roads, an
interstate, and less elevations in these areas. However, the southern area of the
map included more mountains and high elevations that stretched along the south.
3.
Find a point of interest on your map (like the Koko Crater in the example on the power
point). What is this feature? Please explain this feature using your knowledge of
topographic maps.
Please use the 10-Point Rubric as a guide for how to appropriately
respond to this question.
After examining the topographic map, I chose of Conyers, Georgia, I
found a few points of interest. One in particular being the Elijah Mountain,
located south of Browns Mill Lake. Using my knowledge of topographic maps, I
could tell this was a fairly steep summit by the closeness of the contour lines. This
widespread mountain peaks at about 900 feet. I found this easily by following the
darker lines to an index contour line and from there counting the lines to the peak
using the contour interval of 20 feet. The lower elevations of this mountain are
located at the borderline shared between Dekalb County and Rockdale County;
however, the peak resides in Dekalb County.
