Introduction to Urban Geography
Dr. Rice
Assignment 1
This assignment asks you to explore suburbs and suburbanization in urban geography. We are
interested in its key drivers, mechanisms of inequality, and recent changes. Complete each of
the following items and turn in one word document with your answers on ELC.
1.
After watching the
2006
film,
Radiant City
, identify and describe
two
behaviors of the
Moss family that are typical of why suburbs were/are popular. Then, identify and
describe
two
interventions about urbanization from the experts regarding the negative
effects of suburban sprawl. Finally, put these in conversation about the “pros” and
“cons” of suburbanization to illustrate why having a deep understanding of tensions
produced by decades of suburbanization is key for urban geography. [approx. 300 words
– short essay]

2.
Explore the
Race and Suburbanization Resources
document on ELC. Make sure you
understand how each of these mechanism (there are 8!) interact with suburbanization in
the United States (they will be on exam 1). Write short response about
one
of the
mechanisms that you feel most contributes to inequality between urban and suburban
areas
today
and why. Add additional citations, if necessary. [approx. 150 words – short
response]
3.
Research a suburb
that starts with your first or last initial (e.g., Dr. Rice could research
Richardson, Texas which it a suburb of Dallas) to see if it has it become more diverse in
the past few decades. This could be race, income, immigration status/origin, LGBTQ
resources/residents, religion, and more! Write up a short essay explaining your findings.
Be creative in how you find this information out! Please be sure to properly cite all work
and provide a full bibliography. Any reasonable sources are ok (newspapers, government
websites, research-oriented websites, even Wikipedia is ok if it is not the only thing you
use
). [approx. 300 words – short essay].
