Week 4 Assignment
Your Term: Carbon Tax
The Carbon Tax is a term used to refer to a fee that is places on the emission of
greenhouse gases using burning fossil fuels such as coal. The goal of the Carbon Tax is to lower
the amount of fossil fuels being used and thereby lowering their effect on our atmosphere. This is
achieved by levying a tax on fossil fuel use that encourages consumers, businesses, and
organizations to reduce or eliminate their use of these energy sources. According to Earth.org
there are currently 27 countries that have adopted some form of a carbon tax (Earth.org, 2021).
One country that is not included in that list is the U.S.
By implementing the Carbon Tax people must now directly face their fossil fuel use and
become educated on their effects on the environment. Then they must make a choice to either
pay the tax or avoid emitting carbons. Either way the tax implementation encourages people to
become aware of their environment and how their actions impact because it is now affecting their
hard-earned money.
The most effective action we can take today is to pressure our politicians to get on board
with the Carbon Tax as the U.S. is one of the countries with the highest emissions per citizen but
no Carbon Tax initiatives. This would be a huge step in fighting climate change and global
warming which would help everyone. The next most effective action is obviously to reduce our
emissions of harmful carbons. This can be achieved in numerous ways such as utilizing solar
energy or wind energy that is clean and renewable. Or since transportation is the largest emitter
of greenhouse gases in the US (EPA, n.d.) we can take advantage of electric vehicles instead of
traditional petroleum or diesel transportation.
