Hello class,
The potential hazard I went with for this discussion post is
Lake Mahopac in Mahopac NY. Mahopac is a suburban town in
Putnam County NY with a little less than 9000 people spread
out over roughly 7 very hilly square miles. It has 4 volunteer
firehouses with EMS, 1 police precinct, the closest hospital is
Putnam Hospital in the neighboring town of Carmel, and it has
1 main high school with a few elementary schools mixed in. It
is a mixture of private houses, wooded areas, a commercial
strip along route 6 and Lake Mahopac. One of the main
attractions for the town is the lake itself. In the winter time it
attracts people who ice skate and go ice fishing. In the
summer time it is filled with people and boats.
Some of the hazards presented by Lake Mahopac are both
human and natural. The human ones presented are based of
the attraction presented above. When the lake freezes people
go out on the ice to ice fish or kids go out not understanding
the dangers, which can lead to ice rescue situations. In the
summer time people come from all over to ride jet skis, go on
boats and swim in the lake. At times it looks like the lake is
overcrowded and with some people who are unfamiliar with
the lake this can be a recipe for disaster. For this discussion, I
will focus on the potential for flooding of Lake Mahopac. In the
map below I marked the main potential flooding zone in red
and labelled it "A." The secondary potential flood zones are
marked in yellow and labelled "B1," "B2," "B3." I went with
this type of labeling because Mahopac is very hilly and the
hills will create channels for the flooding to spread if the
flooding is severe enough. Some other vulnerabilities on the
map that are concerning to me is 2 of the 4 fire houses in the
town are in potential flood zones, with 1 being in zone "A,"
which is the biggest firehouse in the town, and another being
in zone "B1." Another concerning point is that the only police
precinct is also in zone "A." Route 6 runs through both zones
"A" and "B". It starts just south of the lake and then follows up
the east side of the lake. Route 6 is the major road not only
because it is a commercial district in Mahopac but it is also the
road that leads to both the Taconic Parkway and I684. If Lake
Mahopac were to flood this road would be heavily affected
causing both damage to the stores and traffic issues for
people leaving.
This assignment was my first time using this tool. The google
maps was fairly straight forward with the assistance of the
instructions and help page. In my current and future roles I
can see myself using it to aide in area familiarization, how we
respond to different locations in our area, and help mark
where there are hazards that are out of the ordinary for us.
