Hobbs, J. E. (2020). Food supply chains during the COVID
‐
19 pandemic.
Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics/Revue Canadienne d’agroeconomie,
cjag.12237.
In this article, “Food supply chains during the COVID-19 pandemic” by, Jill Hobbs
states many concerns with food and supply shortages due to the pandemic. Items,
mainly necessities, on store shelves were quickly disappearing. Canada was used in
this article describing the food chains they have been experiencing. When the pandemic
hit, it was a shock for everyone and that's when many were out buying multiples of the
same item as if it were “hoarding.” There have been issues with customers getting what
they want. Some aren’t meeting their nutritional needs. Most places are in desperate
need of workers. Some relationships between buyer and supplier have grown. They
talked about shelfs being empty because of no workers in stores, but it’s also because
they are short for transportation and in manufacturing/ warehouses.
The food supply chain is an important topic and it has been talked about a lot
more since the pandemic has started. As a student majoring in nursing, there are many
things to talk about related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Jobs in healthcare have been
facing major challenges recently. Shortages of supplies like gowns, masks, gloves,
cleaning products, and items needed everyday. They have also been faced with staff
shortages. Patients aren’t getting the care they should be due to these issues.
Overall, this pandemic has faced many challenges, disputes, and loss. Nutritional
needs have been a huge factor everywhere and many are becoming sick. Being on a
healthy diet and making healthier decisions is vital, especially during this time.
Hopefully, we can all work together to stay working, be healthy and remain in our
individual lifestyles.

Larsen, R., Mangrio, E., & Persson, K. (2020). Interpersonal Communication in
Transcultural Nursing Care in India: A Descriptive Qualitative Study. Journal of
Transcultural Nursing
In the article, “Interpersonal Communication is transcultural Nursing Care in
India,” learning and knowing the different cultures and having good communication is
key. There are many language barriers that can be an issue. Two people being able to
speak the same language fluently, you will have a better outcome of what is being said.
Recently, there has been a global interaction increase. It has been recurring that many
are making conversations with people of different cultures. This article did a study by
asking nurses questions based on culture and communication, and how they interact
with patients on a daily basis.
In nursing, cultural diversity is big, and we want to make sure we are clearly
understanding patients so they are getting the proper care they should be getting. All
cultures have different health practices; perceptions about illness, diseases, or other
causes. Some have their own ways of expressing their concerns. Appreciation for
different and various cultures is important for a nurse to provide adequate care for the
patient. Having confidence and being aware of your surroundings is also key. Many take
classes about learning how to interact with cultures and to better communicate before
going into the profession.
Cultural competence, being aware, self-reflection of one’s own background.
Making sure you know how to obtain the information you are being given based on that
culture. When a situation comes up, it’s important to engage and interact with patients
from their background. Culturally competent and safe health care is dependent on the
provider’s understanding of the cultural background.

Nielsen, D. S., & Dieperink, K. B. (2020). Cultural Perspectives and Nurses
Reactions on the Corona Pandemic: A Critical View From Denmark.Journal of
Transcultural Nursing, 104365962092411.
The corona pandemic is global. They stated in this article that some nurses might
have to face global challenges rather than just in their area. The government in
Denmark has been very watchful from the health authorities. Precautions were taken
immediately at the start of covid. In Denmark, after the first few cases came out, laws
came out that were agreed upon. Many work together to achieve goals. An example
that was said in the article talked about a nurse asking someone for food. They said,
“We take care of you, if you take care of us.” They had done teamwork and collaborated
together, especially when this pandemic was first known. Past healthcare workers,
students, and other healthcare professionals are willing to work frontlines when times
are scarce. Other studies have shown volunteer help has increased since the
pandemic. In healthcare, plans and strategies took a roll, and leadership was built.
Routines were being adjusted. Culture played a factor in Demarks Hospital settings.
Culture has an influence on everyone's individual lifestyle. It also shows one’s
personality traits. A study was done on nurses personalities in Denmark. These results
were, “The devoted, The concerned, The noisemaker.” After reading about them, to me,
they are all opposites and one's beliefs and personalities are different.
On the nursing aspect, they analyzed the cultures in both the staff and patients.
They stated, “Culture is the shared way of life of a group of people.” There were many
cultural patterns and reactions shown in Denmark since the pandemic started. I found it
interesting to see how a different country than where we are from faced this pandemic.
They had a plan and put it into action by working together and making sacrifices.

Hawthorne, T. and M. P. Kwan. 2012. "Using GIS and Perceived Distance to
Understand the Unequal Geographies of Healthcare in Lower-Income Urban
Neighborhoods."The Geographical Journal178(1): 18-30.
This article gave a good view of how geographers play a role in the healthcare
setting. Quality of care and patient satisfaction data was collected, and it was done by
using GIS and perceived distance. There are common factors like, travel time/distance,
cost, convenience, and what people prefer. It is seen that in lower-income areas, the
healthcare is lower and patients aren’t getting the proper care. In this research, health
geographies compared and contrasted the difference in healthcare to the lower-income
urban areas. They looked at their individual experience and lifestyles at home and in
their everyday life. Results came from many states across the US. Employment status
is a factor in all areas. They had seen unemployed people a little further from care than
employed. Evidence shows that those who are employed have much more flexibility to
switch to a different healthcare, rather than the unemployed can be a little more difficult.
Spatial differences in quality of care differences between people which can lead to an
empowering experience for society's disadvantaged members struggling to access
healthcare services. The objective of this study is for us to see the differences and to
help make sure the ones in need get the proper care they should be getting.
I feel exploring all options is key before choosing what you want to do. Nursing
staff are in high demand for many areas right now. We hope to improve the quality of
care in some healthcare facilities. We want a positive community change.

Newcomb, Patricia and Jianling Li. 2008. "Predicting Admissions for Childhood
Asthma Based on Proximity to Major Roadways."Journal of Nursing Scholarship
40 (4): 319-325.
Asthma is a chronic disorder. Many hospitalizations and serious hospital visits
with children have to do with asthma. Prevalence rates show asthma is a rage from age
and how individuals interact in their daily lives. Children are being cared for in many
settings by healthcare professionals. There are studies between traffic emissions and
asthma related outcomes. Spatial patterns of patients with different locations have
correlation of traffic exposure and childhood asthma.
Many asthma events were related to traffic exposures. While some inconsistent
results have been seen. Outcomes have been different due to the defining an asthma
phenotype. Variables and measurements were taken. A dependent variable is a more
serious case.
It’s important to control all patients with serious cases. Throughout this article, it
was mainly children. Nurses who have advanced practice are able to diagnose children
and other adults with this disease. When symptoms occur at an early stage its best to
start care right away. Proper healthcare services need to be taken. Race, age, and
gender, and lifestyles are the main factors of childhood asthma. Children with this
disease need the proper care they should be getting.
