Choose one of the three PEs/Standards listed in the LPP instructions for your Lesson Plan Project. Please write it out (not just the code, but the standard itself) NGSS K-PS3-1 Make observations to determine the effect of sunlight on Earth's surface. 2. Go to the NGSS website and find the PE. You will find clarification statement(s) and the Assessment boundary (the limit of what students should be required to know/do) in red . List them here. Assessment boundary: Assessment of temperature should be limited to relative measures of warmer/cooler Clarification statement: Examples of Earth’s surface include sand, soil, rocks and water 3. The PE suggests a SEP, a DCI, and a CCC to be taught in tandem. List them here. CCC- Cause and Effect: Events have causes that generate observable patterns. DCI- PS3.B: Conservation of Energy and Energy Transfer: Sunlight warms Earth’s surface. SEP- Planning and Carrying Out Investigations: Planning and carrying out investigations to answer questions or test solutions to problems in K–2 builds on prior experiences and progresses to simple investigations, based on fair tests, which provide data to support explanations or design solutions.-Make observations (firsthand or from media) to collect data that can be used to make comparisons. . Each NGSS PE contains a set of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). For example: “2-PS1-4: Construct an argument with evidence that some changes caused by heating or cooling can be reversed and some cannot.”, seems to contain the following SLOs: a. After this lesson, students will be able to explain that some changes caused by heating or cooling can be reversed and some cannot. 1
b. After this lesson, students will be able to classify processes as reversible or not. c. After this lesson, students will be able to provide evidence to support their classification. Note that SLOs need to be specific and measurable. Your lesson doesn’t need to cover the entire PE, but it must directly address the SLO(s) you choose. Keep in mind that your lesson must include a way to assess your SLOs. 4. What will be your desired student learning outcome(s) for the lesson? a. After this lesson, students will be able to explain some ways that sunlight affects the surface of the Earth. b. After this lesson, students will be able to classify four types of surfaces found on Earth, rocks, sand, water and soil. c. After this lesson, students will be able to determine if the sun is cooling or warming the surfaces of Earth. 2
