EL Nino Web Quest
1. Explain what happens during an El Nino.
In the event of an El Nino, you can expect the temperatures in the eastern and central equatorial Pacific
Ocean to be warmer, on average.
2. How are sea temperatures and weather conditions during an El Niño different from non-El Niño?
Sea temperatures and weather conditions are different during an El Nino than a non-El Nino event. This
is because during an El Nino event, the sea surface temperature are warmer on average, with increased
rainfall, as well as a drier conditions in some areas. In the event of a non-El nino, there are more neutral
weather conditions, with average rainfall conditions, and a more typical temperature.
3. What effects are there on Pacific Sea life and productivity during El Niño?
An El Nino disrupts the normal oceanic and atmospheric conditions to the Pacific sea life and
productivity. This includes changes in Sea surface temperatures, disruption of upwelling, negative
impact on fisheries, and coral bleaching.

6. What effect does El Niño have on the United States?
El Niño in the United States is associated with warmer and drier conditions in the southern parts,
potentially leading to increased drought, while the northern regions may experience wetter conditions.
7. What effect does El Niño have on the western Pacific?
El Niño typically brings drier-than-average conditions to the western Pacific, contributing to increased
drought risk in the region.
8. Give the weather effects El Niño has on the state where you live during:
During El Niño, California often experiences above-average rainfall, leading to an increased risk of
flooding, mudslides, and storms.
9. What difference in the average temperature does El Niño cause in your state during winter:
El Niño tends to bring warmer-than-average temperatures to California during the winter months.
10. What difference in average rainfall does El Niño cause in your state during winter:
El Niño typically leads to above-average rainfall in California during the winter months.

The 1960’s and 1980’s decade have had the most El Nino events since 1950s.
14. Is the number of El Niño events increasing or decreasing in recent years?
It’s been decreasing in recent years, but is starting to grow again.
15. Do you think El Niño events are becoming more or less severe? Why?
I think El Nino events are becoming more severe because of climate change, making it more difficult to
predict the severity of it, but it will continue to get worse if we don’t find a solution to climate change.
16. What do you think would happen to your state if El Niño events occurred more frequently? Give at
least four impacts, explaining each.
If El Niño events were to occur more frequently in California, it could lead to increased risks of heavy
rainfall, storms, and flooding during the winter months.
8. Do you think some coastal areas and marine life would benefit or be negatively impacted?
Why? How?
The impact on coastal areas and marine life during El Niño can vary, with potential benefits from
increased rainfall for ecosystems countered by risks such as storms, sea level rise, and ocean
temperature changes that could negatively affect biodiversity and coastal communities.
El Nino This year
What is happening with El Nino this year? What is the expected temperature and precipitation for
California this year? Just research on the internet
There is a moderate El Nino season this year. The expected temperature in California is about
mid-60s F (about 18 °C), with an annual precipitation average of about 14 inches (350 mm)
.
