Homework 7 – Graph Creation and Interpretation 1. Create a graph of the following data. You may use the graph paper provided to create it by hand (attached under the assignment) or use a graphing program on your computer (XCEL, etc). Be sure to label both axes, put the independent and dependent variables on the correct axes, select a scale that makes sense for the graph. ( 8 pts ) [HINT: A bar graph is the best way to go] Average Total Precipitation per Month in Tucson, AZ Month Average Total Precipitation (inches) Jan 0.89 Feb 0.84 Mar 0.76 Apr 0.39 May 0.18 Jun 0.27 Jul 2.02 Aug 2.16 Sep 1.16 Oct 0.75 Nov 0.77 Dec 0.97 2. Which of the following is the INDEPENDENT variable? (1 pt) Month Average Total Precip 3. Which of the following in the DEPENDENT variable? (1 pt) Month Average Total Precip 4. During which month of the year does Tucson experience the most rainfall on average? (1 pt) 5. During which month of the year does Tucson experience the least rainfall on average? (1 pt) 6. Is rainfall spread out fairly evenly during the year in Tucson, or are there periods that seem to be wetter than others? (1 pt)
7. Tucson is part of the Sonoran Desert. The Sonoran Desert is a unique desert in that it is considered a wet desert, receiving more average yearly rainfall than most other deserts while still being dry enough to be categorized as a desert (less than 10 inches of rain per year). The Sonoran Desert experiences two annual monsoon seasons, which bring a lot of rain to the desert over a relatively short period of time. This double monsoon contributes to the vast biodiversity that thrives in this desert. Based on your graph and your answers to #4-6, when do Tucson’s two monsoons occur during the year (in general … seasons/time of year)? (2 pts) 8. Which of Tucson’s two monsoons is the stronger of the two (i.e., most precipitation)? (1 pt) 9. What month of the year would you predict Tucson is most susceptible to flash floods? Why? (2 pts) 10. There are years when one or both of Tucson’s monsoon seasons are very mild or even don’t happen at all. During those times, what do you predict happens to Tucson’s water table? Why? (2 pts)
