Exam I Questions
A subset of the following questions will comprise most of Exam I held on
Thursday, September 29th
.
On the exam, be sure to draft an organized, comprehensive essay response to each question. Unannotated
lists offered as responses will not receive credit.
In other words, if a question asks for a specific set of
things or concepts, be sure to fully describe each, not just a simple list of undefined concepts. In your
responses, do not assume any
Please note that Exam I will contain one question from course materials that is not included in this
set of possible exam questions.
Also, be advised that responses must draw solely from course lectures and reading assignments in order to
receive credit. In other words, responses drawn for Wikipedia or any other outside source, irrespective of
their accuracy or truthfulness, will not receive credit.

lecture and the Palen text.
What were the causes of the City Beauthiful Movement? What were the policies and initiatives in cities
that brought it into being?
Discuss the factors and conditions that led to the growth of Baltimore, New York City, and Chicago in the
19th century.
What is a “political boss?” According to the assigned Palen reading, why did political bosses exist?
Fully describe the causes and outcomes of the Great Migration. Be sure to discuss the ways in which
Northern cities changed because of it.
What were the policy responses to the Great Depression? How did they affect cities?
What were post-WWII policies that affected cities? Describe the ways that metropolitan areas were
afftected.
What were the urban trends in post-1960s US?
As discussed in lecture, what are the current urban trends in the US?
Describe the features and tenets of the Chicago School of Urban Ecology. What was your instructor’s
criticism of it?
Describe the features and tenets of the Los Angeles School of postmodern urban development. Do you
think it’s reasonable to theorize about cities in such a way? Why or why not?
What are the four principles of urban political economy as discussed in class? Provide examples of each
not offered in class.
What is a market imperfection? Describe at least three discussed in class that affect urban development.
What do Logan and Molotch mean by use and exchange values as the central conflict in urban
development? What are some examples they provide? Discuss fully.
What does the Palen text have to say about why gentrification is taking place?
What themes from this class are present in the movie “Battle for Brooklyn?” Describe fully.
What is export base theory? How does it relate to the need for a diversified local economy?
What is meant by the term “multiplier effect?” What does it have to do with urban economics?
Why is Japan cited by your instructor as an example of an exception to export base theory?
As discussed in class, describe the various solutions to automobile congestion from cities around the
world.
