1 Name _________________________ Lab F our teen: Geospatial Technologies In this activity, you will investigate the various types of plate boundaries using earthquake depth and location to determine boundary type using geospatial technology. In addition, you will explore the use of geospatial technologies and how you may apply them to your major. Materials: Computer Objectives: Identify relationships between earthquakes and plate boundaries. Research geospatial technologies applications for your course of study. Identify potential jobs and earning potential. Part 1: Plate Tectonics and Earthquakes Have you ever considered the relationship between plate boundaries and earthquake depth and location? Part 1 of the lab uses geospatial technology to interactively explore this relationship. Exercise 1 4 .1: 1. Click on the map URL: http://esriurl.com/earthgeoinquiry6 to launch the map. 2. With the Details pane visible, click the button, Show Contents of Map. 3. Turn on the layer, Global Quakes Of Large Magnitude 5.8 Or Greater. Q1: What patterns are visible where quakes occur? 4. Turn on the layer, Relative Motion At Plate Boundaries. Note that you will not see anything until you perform the next step. 5. Press the button, Bookmarks. Select a Bookmark and answer question 2 before selecting another Bookmark. Q2a: Record the plate movement in the table below. Bookmark Plate Movement (e.g., colliding, moving apart, sliding past) Boundary Type (e.g. convergent, divergent, transform) California South America Mid Atlantic Ridge Earthquakes occur where large pieces of the earth’s crust run into, pull away from, or slide against other pieces of independent crust.
2 6. Turn on the layer, Plate Boundaries. 7. Click the Plate Boundaries layer name so you can see its legend. 8. Revisit each bookmark and answer Question 3 before selecting another bookmark. Q 2 b : Record the boundary type in the table above. 9. Turn off the layer, Global Quakes Of Large Magnitude 5.8 Or Greater . 10. Turn on the layer, South American Quakes. 11. Hover the mouse over the layer name, South American Quakes. 12. Click the button, Change Style. 13. Change the attribute (#1) from Show Location Only to Depth_km. – The new symbology draws dots larger according to how deep quakes occur. 14. Click Done to apply these changes. 15. Using the Bookmark for South America, answer the following questions: Q3: Do these earthquakes occur only at the boundary between plates? Q4: What is happening between these two plates that would create this pattern of earthquake depth? 16. Complete the following table by also looking at Quake Depth for the California and Mid Atlantic Ridge layers. Q5: Complete this chart: Plate Boundary Pattern of Quakes compared to Boundary (e.g. one side only, both sides, close to boundary) Pattern of Depth (e.g., shallow, gets progressing deeper, mixed depths) Convergent Divergent Transform 17. Hover the mouse over the layer name, Plate Boundaries.
3 18. Click the button, Change Style. 19. Change the attribute (#1) from Boundary_Type to Show Location Only. – The new symbology draws all plate boundaries as black lines. 20. Click Done to apply these changes. 21. Turn on the layer, Caribbean Quakes. Q6: Based on the table in Question 5, what type of plate boundary occurs here? Using the following resources, explore the field of Geography and GIS . Exercise 1 4 .2: Start by exploring Geography.com . This website explains the various aspects of geography as a discipline. 1. What are two things you found interesting about geography as a discipline? Near the bottom is a section on Geography is GIS. Click on the link to GIS Career Resources. This link will take you to a new website (which is actually using a type of geospatial technology called a Story Map). 2. List two job descriptions and salaries related to GIS.
