GL101 Lab:
Shorelines
Lab Activity:
SHORELINES
Use the provided topographic maps plus Google Earth to answer the questions below.
A. Provincetown Quadrangle, Massachusetts.
1. Find Race Point and Long Point on the map and on Google Earth. What are these features
called? What process formed them?
2. In the space below make a sketch map of this area, showing with arrows the directions of
longshore drift along the coast.

3. Find Hatches Harbor on the map and Google Earth. Describe the changes you observe
between 1958 (the date of the map) and today.
B. Rehoboth Quadrangle, Delaware
1. Look closely at the shape of beach in the towns of Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach.
(See the Rehoboth placemark on Google Earth.) What man-made structures would have
caused this shape? Why would they have been built? What does the evidence indicate is the
direction of longshore drift along the coast here?
2. Jetties at Indian River Inlet keep the inlet open for boats, but block sand flow along the
coast. What effect is that likely to have on the beaches north and south of inlet? Check
Google Earth to see if the beaches have changed since 1958.
4. Is the coastline here emergent or submergent? What is your evidence?
5. South of the map area, the narrow beach ridge between the ocean and coastal bays is
referred to as Fenwick Island, even though it is actually attached to the mainland. What
are
long sandy islands along coastlines called? Where else along the Atlantic coast can
examples of these islands be found? Use Google Earth to find your examples.

A.
Cayucos Quadrangle, California
1. What is the feature forming at the mouth of Chorro Creek? Why is it forming here?
2. What is the name of the long, narrow feature (marked by the Morro Bay State Park
placemark) that has formed across the mouth of Morro Bay? What is the direction of
longshore drift in Morro Bay State Park? What is your evidence?
3. Is the direction of longshore drift farther north in Morro Strand State Park, near Cayucos,
likely to be different? Why or why not?
4. Is the coastline here emergent or submergent? What is your evidence? (Hint: look at the flat
land surface above the sea cliffs at Point Buchon in the southern part of the map and
marked by a placemark on Google Earth.)
