2.1.7 Practice: Comparing Responses to the Global Depression Practice World History, Culture and Geography Sem 2 Points Possible: 30 Name: Travis Dome Date: In this assignment, you will complete the following steps: 1. Research: Using reliable sources, research key actions taken by the German, Japanese, and U.S. governments to address the Great Depression. 2. Analyze: Answer questions that compare and contrast each government's response to the financial crisis. 3. Synthesize: Draw conclusions about global responses to the Depression and predict how these responses affected each country following the crisis. This section is worth 15 points. See the scoring rubric below for more details on how you will be graded on your research.
You have learned about some of the key actions taken by the German, Japanese, and U.S. governments to address the Great Depression. Using reliable resources, you will now research additional responses from these countries. For each country, record three responses to the Great Depression not covered in this lesson (ideas mentioned in timelines are O.K.). Be sure to include the date of each response. At least one response for each country should involve that country's military. When you finish your research, write a few sentences summarizing each country's overall response to the Great Depression. Take notes in the graphic organizer provided below. Begin your research by looking at the websites below. There you will find links to other web pages and sites that may be helpful as well. Million upon millions of young men had become drafted The more and more Hitler rose, the stronger the Nazi’s had become Briefly summarize the German approach: Germany forced many young men to work and join the military which gave Hitler more power. Hitler would force young men and men with no jobs to join his army. Japan China and Japan had another war The Japanese government started to decline in both economic and political power. Japan’s military power did increase as their weapons and their bombs grew stronger. Prime Minister Fumimaro enforced stricter rules for religion in japan. Briefly summarize the Japanese approach: Japan achieved an early recovery from the Great Depression of the 1930s. A veteran finance minister, Takahashi Korekiyo, managed to stage the recovery by prescribing a combination of expansionary fiscal, exchange rate, and monetary policies . United States London began influencing the U.S. military Sent indirect help to banks by sending them loans to avoid bankruptcy

Lowly armored and not combat ready Worked to help restore faith of the economy Briefly summarize the U.S. approach: The president created bills that allowed people to get funded money from the government, such as low income, elderly, or disabled people. They also passed a law for medicare, and medicaid. These allowed help for those same people. This section is worth 10 points. See the scoring rubric below for more details on how you will be graded. Use your research findings to answer the questions below. Remember to support your answers with evidence from your notes. For questions 1 and 2, select two of the three countries you researched (Germany, Japan, or the United States).
1. Choose two of the countries you researched and answer the following question. How were these countries' approaches to the Great Depression similar? Germany started the 1930s with a to a great degree powerless economy, however, the Nazis soon settled a fascism; subsequently, the administration could seek after aggressive strategies without dread of restriction. By differentiating, Japan entered the 1930s with a generally solid economy, however, a separated government; numerous capable Japanese authorities contradicted military extension. 2. Choose two of the countries you researched and answer the following question. How were these countries' approaches to the Great Depression different? The reason they took different approaches was because they had different problems. Japan is a small island with limited resources, and trading became very difficult when countries raised their tariffs. To counteract this, Japan wanted to take land that was plentiful in natural resources. This solution wouldn’t have helped the U.S. though, because the U.S. was not low on resources, but many citizens were jobless so the country created jobs in an attempt to neutralize this. 3. How did the United States and Germany use the power of the government to solve the problems of the Great Depression? For both Germany and the United States, a major part of responding to the Great Depression involved funding public works projects through government spending. These projects helped to solve one of the worst problems of the Depression: unemployment. 4. How did the U.S. government's approach to the military during the Great Depression differ from that of Germany's Nazi government? The Great Depression affected Germany in that the Weimar Republic experienced heavy inflation in the decade of 1920 because Germany had to pay many reparations due to World War 1 and the agreements of the Versailles Pact. The Weimar Republic decided to borrow money from the United States instead of collecting more taxes on its citizens. The government cut spending and the interests paid to the US worsened the poor economic situation in Germany. This situation created a frustrated and angry people ready to accept the radical ideas of the Nazi Party and Adolph Hitler.
5. Of the three countries you researched, which approach to the Great Depression do you think was most effective? Why? I think that the United States’ approach to the crisis was more effective than that of Germany and Japan, because the U.S. was able to stay on their feet until more job opportunities arose in World War II, and although there were some casualties, they were able to last until the next world war without taking over the government, or conquering other countries, and generally without as many casualties as the amount that resulted from Germany and Japan’s approaches. This section is worth 5 points. See the scoring rubric below for more details on how you will be graded. Use your research findings to answer the questions below. Remember to support your answers with evidence from your notes. 6. Why do you think certain countries favored military solutions to the Great Depression while other countries did not? Germany and Japan favored military solutions more than the United States did. I think the militaristic nations felt they had more to prove on the world stage. For Germans, rearmament became a point of national pride. For the Japanese, imperialism played a similar role. By contrast, Americans entered World War I reluctantly, and they remained reluctant to enter World War II until the bombing of Pearl Harbor left them with few alternatives. 7. Predict how the German, Japanese, and U.S. approaches to the Great Depression may have affected each country once the Depression ended.

The Germans blamed the Great Depression on the German Jews and repressed them severely while the Japanese suspended democracy and came under the dictatorship of Emperor Hirohito and both countries promoted wars of aggression and ended up being defeated by the Allies. The US on the other hand, under FDR developed government infrastructure building programs to keep the Americans employed and then entered WWII and helped defeat the German, Italian and Japanese fascists on the battlefield.
