GLG103 Lab 6 - Plate Motions Worksheet Name: Willow Sutton Four types of plate boundaries: 1. Divergent boundaries (define, in your own words) Divergent Plate Boundaries are points in which the plates are moving away from each other. Illustration: If the boxes below were being used to represent plate boundaries, draw arrows in the boxes below to illustrate the motion between divergent plate boundaries. Examples: Find three specific geographical locations where a divergent plate boundary occurs. List and describe them here: Mid Atlantic Ridge o The Ridge’s features are the result of convection currents from beneath the Earth’s surface force the North American and Eurasian plates apart. East Pacific Rise o Located in California, the East Pacific Rise alternates between transform vaults to transform vaults with spreading centers between them. The divergent plate boundary directly below it is created by the Pacific plate and the Cocos Plates. Galapagos Rise o The Galapagos Rise is located between the South American Coast and the triple junction of the Nazca plate, the Cocos plate, and the Pacific plate. 2. Convergent boundaries (define, in your own words) Convergent plate boundaries are points in which the plates are moving toward each other. Illustration: If the boxes below were being used to represent plate boundaries, draw arrows in the boxes below to illustrate the motion between convergent plate
boundaries. Examples: Find three specific geographical locations where a convergent plate boundary occurs. List and describe them here: Washington-Oregon coastline o The Washington-Oregon coastline of the United States is a location where a convergent plate boundary occurs. In this area, The Juan de Fuca oceanic plate moves into the mantle, where it encounters the North American continental plate above it. Andes Mountain Range o The Andes Mountains were formed from subduction zone volcanism at the boundary in which the Nazca plate and the South American plate converge. Himalaya Mountains o The Himalaya Mountains were formed from the collision of the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate. This location is an example of a continent-continent convergent plate boundary. This means that both plates are continental crust that collided and produced the mountains. 3. Transform boundaries (define, in your own words) Transform Plate Boundaries are points in which the plates skid past one other. Illustration: If the boxes below were being used to represent plate boundaries, draw arrows in the boxes below to illustrate the motion between transform plate boundaries. Examples: Find three specific locations of a transform boundary where a divergent plate boundary occurs. List and describe them here: San Andreas Fault o The San Andreas Fault is a transform plate boundary created as a
result of the fracture zone from the Pacific plate and the North American plate. North Anatolian Fault o The North Anatolian Fault is the transform boundary between the Eurasian plate and the Anatolian plate. It is an active right-lateral fault. Alpine Fault o The Alpine Fault is the location marking the transform boundary between the Australian plate and the Pacific plate. 4. Describe the last type of plate-boundary. The last type of plate-boundary is known as a plate boundary zone. This definition describes a situation in which two plates have no interaction at all. They instead are distinguished by microplates.
