Report
As a resident of the Gulf Coast city of Mobile, Alabama, a hurricane watch has just been issued by the National Hurricane Center for a tropical system approaching your area. Since hurricane watches are issued 48 hours in advance of anticipated storms, would you choose to evacuate based on the watch? What factors would determine whether or not you choose to leave? What are some reasons why individuals may choose to ignore storm warnings from meteorologists? (Your response must be 100 words at minimum for full credit) Respond reflectively to at least two of your peers. Do you agree with their choice either to evacuate or stay? Why or why not? (Remember responses to other students must be a minimum of five full sentences) I think that at the point of a hurricane watch, I would not yet evacuate. I would probably start to think about leaving and prepare myself and my family to leave, depending on the strength of the storm coming. Some people do not trust the warnings from meteorologists, so they don’t listen to the watches and warnings, they believe they know better. Some people may not be able to leave due to mobility issues, not having a vehicle, or having nowhere else to go. Others, admittedly like myself, would have a hard time leaving their belongings and home that they are attached to and couldn’t imagine it being destroyed by the storm, though staying doesn’t mean your home will be safe, of course. Some factors that would influence my choice to leave my home or stay hunkered down would be the storms intensity, and the speed of the wind. I would also want to know what direction the storm was headed and if my area was included in the path. I would also look at evacuation plans. If others around me were evacuating to the point of me not being able to safely leave the area, I would stay. I live in a second story apartment so for a weaker storm, I think I would be okay.
