List as many political, economic and social reasons why people migrate. Many people choose to migrate for many reasons like economic, political and environmental reasons. People see their current life so negatively that they feel pushed away, and they think another place is so attractive that they feel pushed toward it. 2. What are Shantytowns- how do they reflect rural to urban migration? Shantytowns are settlements made up of crudely built shacks built by unemployed people. There is less employment in rural areas, low wages and lack of essentials to life. 3. What are Coyotes? Coyotes are people who smuggle immigrants across the Mexico US border. 4. What are ejidos? Ejidos are rural farming communities in Mexico. 5. What are maquiladoras? Who works at the maquiladoras? How has the maquiladora affected migration in Mexico? What are the pros and cons to the maquiladoras? Maquiladoras are foreign owned plants located in Mexico. They have cheap labor, export assembled products to the United States by export, and an import of product components. There are many pros and cons, some pros are they create many employment opportunities. Some cons are health risks and unsafe working conditions. 6. What is NAFTA? The NAFTA is The North American Free Trade Agreement. Its purpose is to encourage trade between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. 7. What is meant by the “informal economy” in Latin America and the Caribbean? A diverse set of economic activities, jobs, and workers that are not regulated or protected by the state.
