North America Kasi Milford Intro to geography Geography of North America Professor Steinberg May 06, 2021 The physical aspects on the north American continent are some in which stand out greatly with a wide diversity among landscape and climate. From basins, prairies, or the rolling farmlands of the Midwest, to large vast mountain ranges. There are three main mountain ranges across the continent, the Appalachian Mountains, the Rocky Mountains, and the Sierra Nevada. While there is a cold season it does not reach that severity of that of tundra climates. With mostly temperate climates among the region there is a very large advantage for species richness in almost all of the continent’s environments. Despite favorable climates species extinction has increased rapidly among the region. More than one hundred U.S. species already are extinct, and as much as one-third of the nation's species of flora and fauna are at increased risk of extinction. As the second largest continent in the world one may think there is room for much complexity when approaching politics. But, the North American region is relatively very simple compared to that of other areas around the globe. Native Americans and European settlers have shaped most of our values we witness today. The continent consists mainly of Canada and the
United States. These two countries are found to be very peaceful among one another when compared o other parts of the world. One helpful key to this peace is that of NAFTA, in which is an organization created to maintain that peace politically between the countries of North America. Historically speaking, North America has fought a great number of wars with other countries both near and far. From the US revolution from European powers to the Mexican American war. Through it all the continent continues to advance. Waterways were found as the original medium of transportation in most parts of the world including North America. Although, later in history e find that the creation of railroad systems has a positive response in every aspect whether it being transportation of goods, or for leisure travel railroads made way for new horizons. In addition to railways, the innovation of roadways had a significant impact on how our word is today. These roadways stretched to areas in which railroads could or would not. While early roadways had best quality in mainly city areas, they have since advanced to have a better quality even far far away from large, populated cities. In addition to European ideologies industrialization also followed immigrants to North America. While both Canada and the Unites States are both largely industrial still today, one may find that Canada is slightly less industry focused compared the United States. North America has become one of the most developed regions in the world. It mainly consists of the industrial and service sectors. North America benefits greatly from its fertile soils, plentiful freshwater, oil and mineral deposits, and forests. Forestry is the management, cultivation, and harvesting of trees and other vegetation in forests. Extractive activities, such as mining and drilling, dominate the North American economy. Mining provides billions of dollars and millions of jobs throughout the continent. A leading producer of coal, used in energy
production; bauxite, used to create aluminum; iron and copper, both used in construction; and nickel, used to create steel, which North American companies export around the world. People were drawn to the United States by the hope of economic opportunities. As of 2010, the United States was home to approximately 310 million people and was the third-most populated country in the world after China and India. Among developed countries, the US population is one of the fastest growing, at about 1 percent each year. the United States is home to people from all corners of the world and home to many cultural or ethnic minority groups. Both the United States and Canada are products of European colonialism. North America was inhabited by many Native American groups before the Europeans arrived. Complex native societies, federations, and traditional local groups faced the European invasion. Early immigration of Europe to America was mostly people from the British Isles. This resulted in a population dominated by English speakers and Protestant Christianity practices. There were some exceptions, such as Catholicism, German, Spanish, French in northeast Canada, but the majority practiced Protestantism and were of English descendant. As migrants arrived in the America from non-English-speaking countries, they learned English and assimilated into American society, giving rise to the idea of North America as a cultural melting pot. North America is home to people from all corners of the world, and many cultural or ethnic minority groups. Immigrants from Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America have sought opportunities and contributed to the development of the continent. Immigrants or children of immigrants have become scientific, business, and cultural leaders. The strong presence of immigrants is reflected in present-day ethnic neighborhoods: the Cuban “Little Havana” in Miami, Florida; the Somali “Little Mogadishu” in Minneapolis, Minnesota; the Korean “Koreatown” in Toronto, Ontario, Canada; and the North African “Little Maghreb” in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, are just a few.
