Capstone Project
Capstone Project: City Water Plan Proposal
For your capstone project for Earth 111 you will work in pairs to investigate and assess water issues facing a city of your choice that is experiencing water shortages/drought, water availability concerns, or dealing with water quality issues such as increased salinity or high levels of chemicals. Your assignment is to create a water plan that will best address the water problem(s) facing your selected city. The water plan should be based on, 1) your own research and assessment of
the information you collect; 2) consideration for realistic and timely change (i.e., simply suggesting that millions of people should be relocated in the next 2 years to alleviate water scarcity is not ‘realistic’); and 3) the needs of the city that will best address their specific water problems.
See the attachment for the format for your Water Plan Proposal. Answers all the questions; question 3.2 is extra credit (up to 10 points). Include a figure with your proposal. The proposal will make up 50% of the total Capstone Project grade (100 points).
You will receive your partner assignment by November 4
th
. If you have not contacted your partner by November 18
th
, please let me know. If you do not respond to your partner in a reasonable time, you may lose the opportunity to work with a partner.
Presentation Each pair of students will record a presentation outlining their water proposal.
Presentation guidelines:
Focus the presentation on explaining your water plan, as if you are giving the presentation to the city council of your selected city.
Since time is limited, you may choose to cover the most important issue for your city; you do not need to summarize your entire water plan proposal.
Your presentation should include about 8-10 slides. Your last slide needs to be a Reference Slide. Here you will include (in APA formatting) all references you used for data/information/figures in your presentation.
You must keep your presentation to no more than 6-8 minutes.
The presentation will make up 30% of the total Capstone Project grade (60 points).
Proposal Review
A goal of the Capstone Project is to share students’ plans with the class. Students will be asked to review four presentations. I will be assigning specific projects for each pair of students to review. You will use the Proposal Review Form to complete a review of each project. The proposal reviews will make up 20% of the total Capstone Project grade (40 points). Page 1
