1 STATION MODEL Name: Date: Objective To utilize a station model key to read weather conditions at particular locations To build a station model based on current weather conditions Materials Weather Symbols Reference Chart (appended to this worksheet) Station Model Key (appended to this worksheet) Pencil Printer Scanner or camera Procedure 1. Complete the Part I Data section by filling in the information in Data Table 1 for the 5 station models shown. You may use the Station Model Key as a reference. 2. Answer the questions pertaining to Part I . 3. Complete the Part II Data section by listing the names of the symbols and the numbers that you would use to make a station model based on the information in the table below. Make sure to account for all 7 factors that are in the table. Use the sample weather station on the worksheet and fill in what you would put in each numbered area of the station matching the location of the numbers with the correct information. 4. Answer the questions pertaining to Part II . 5. Complete the Application section. You will be looking up the weather where you live. 6. Save and upload your finished lab.
PART I Part I Data Table I (35 pts) Use the images below to answer questions about each station. (1 pt per cell = 35 pts total) Temp Station F) Dew Point F) Wind Speed (Knots) Wind Direction (Blowing From) Air Pressure (mb) Sky (% Coverage) Present Weather 1 2 3 4 5
Part I Observations 1. Which station(s) had the lowest air pressure? (2 pts) Station(s): 2. Which station(s) had the most cloud coverage? (2 pts) Station(s): Part I Analysis & Conclusions 1. Which station model(s) is located in an area experiencing 100% humidity? (2 pts) Station(s): 2. If one of the station models were to show that the barometric pressure was steadily dropping and the current weather conditions showed a light drizzle with a temperature of 65º, what would you expect the weather to be over the next six hours? (5 pts) 3. Describe the current climate of Station Model 2. Think about cloud coverage, barometric pressure, the difference between temperature and dew point and what that tells you about the humidity. (5 pts)

PART II Part II Data Write the symbols and number and where they would be located using the numbers in the diagram using the data table in the lesson for Part II for all the symbols that you would need to make a station model. (8 points per city = 40 pts) Rochester 1. _______________ 2. _______________ 3. _______________ 4. _______________ 5. _______________________________________________ 6. Buffalo 1. _______________ 2. _______________ 3. _______________ 4. _______________ 5. _______________________________________________ 6. 5- Tell how it is shaded (2pts) 1 2 3 4 6- Tell where the wind arrow is pointing and what it would look like (2 pts)

Part II Observations 1. In which station model would you draw a black rectangle within the circle for cloud coverage? (2 pts) City: 2. Which city was experiencing the greatest wind speeds? (2 pts) City: Part II Analysis & Conclusions 1. Two of the cities had temperatures which matched the dew point and were experiencing precipitation. In which two cities did this occur, and why did they each experience a different form of precipitation? (4 pts) 2. What symbol would you draw if Syracuse was experiencing severe thunderstorms with hail? (4 pts) 3. Which type of clouds would you expect to see in New York City? (3 pts)

Type your zip code into the box on the left side of the page. If you do not live in the U.S., choose any U.S. city you would like to investigate. This will bring up current weather information for your area. Based on this information, draw a station model . 1. Name of the city and weather station (four letter identifier) _____________________ 2. Current date and time ____________________________ 3. Box 1 from Station Model ________________________ 4.
