Lab 1: Leslie Martinez Part 1: Location on Earth and Map Projections 1. Using a political globe, find the following cities and give as closely as possible the latitude and longitude of each. Estimate to the nearest degree. If a globe is not available, refer to any good atlas. Or, use this world map that shows capital cities. Lab 1-world map a. Moscow, Russia: 55 N, 38 E b. Lima, Peru: 21 S, 76 W c. Oslo, Norway: 59 N, 10 E d. Canberra, Australia: 35 S, 149 E 2. Using the same resource that you did for the previous question, find out which national capital cities are at the following approximate coordinates. Lab 1-world map a. 45 degrees North, 75 degrees West: Ottawa, Canada b. 64 degrees North, 22 degrees West: Reykjavik, Iceland c. 35 degrees North, 139 degrees East: Tokyo, Japan d. 36 degrees North, 10 degrees East: Tunis, Tunisia 3. Explain the error in each of the following statements. a. Latitude of 20 degrees East and Longitude of 40 degrees South - The error with this statement is that both of the directions are doing different ways: latitude does not go east and longitude does not go south. Latitude goes north and south while longitude goes east or west. (Visualizing Physical geography p. 12). b. Latitude of 85 degrees North and Longitude of 185 degrees West - The error with this statement is that the longitude can not go up to 185. In the textbook on page 13 it states that the longitude ranges from 0 to 180 east or west. 4. Using Figure 1.14 in your textbook (Time zones of the world), what is the time difference in hours between the following locations. PLEASE BE SURE TO USE THE FIGURE IN THE TEXTBOOK as it is based on global standard time.
Lab 1: Leslie Martinez a. Alaska and South Africa: Alaska time zone is 3:00 am, while South Africa time zone is 2:00 pm. b. United Kingdom and western Australia: The United Kingdom time zone is 12:00 pm, while western Australia time zone is 8:00 pm. 5. For each of the properties listed below, which of the three map projections described in your textbook (Mercator, Goode, or Winkel Tripel) does that property apply. a. Displays true shapes of regions anywhere on the map: Mercator (Page 23) b. Displays true sizes of regions anywhere on the map: Goode (Page 24) c. All parallels are straight lines (note: there are two answers, so provide both!): Merctor and Goode. Part 2: Ozone Layer Science 1. What is ozone, and why is the ozone layer in the stratosphere important to life on Earth? Be absolutely sure to explain in your own words. - The ozone layer is super important. The ozone layer is in the stratosphere that absorbs radiation that is coming from the sun, the layer helps prevent the radiation from reaching our plant surface. Furthermore, the ozone layer is important to life on earth because it also absorbs the UV light (UVB). The ozone layer protects us and our environments from the harmful ultraviolet light. U.S Environmental Protection Agency, Basic ozone layer science https://www.epa.gov/ozone-layer-protection/basic-ozone-layer-science 2. Why does the "Ozone Hole" occur primarily over Antarctica at the beginning of the Southern Hemisphere spring (approximately August through October)? - The ozone hole occurs primarily over Antarctica at the beginning of the Southern Hemisphere from August through October because, the cooler winters. The cool temperature will cause the chlorine atoms to get into the clouds, the clouds are form the cool and dry air. When it is not dark and the sunlight comes out, the UV light will end up releasing the atoms into the stratosphere. These atoms may destroy the ozone layer but the process keeps repeating.
