Oil Spill Bioremediation Laboratory Christine Kaweck SCI207: Our Independence Upon The Environment Instructor: Muthu Kuchanur 27 September 2023
Every year, our oceans are polluted with millions of gallons of oil. Oil discharged into the ocean can harm habitats such as wetlands and oyster reefs. Habitat losses may alter migration patterns and disrupt life cycles of animals and result in erosion of shorelines. Oil destroys the insulating ability of fur-bearing mammals, such as sea otters, and the water repellency of a bird's feathers, thus exposing these creatures to the harsh elements. Without the ability to repel water and insulate from the cold water, birds and mammals will die from hypothermia.” (NOAA, 2023). Oil spills can result in closures of beaches, parks, waterways, and recreational and commercial fisheries. The purpose of this lab is for students to see and document the nature of oil and what impact it can have on our oceans and environments. I learned from this lab that water and oily truly do not mix and I was able to observe the general process and break down of microbes used to break down oil. In cases like the Deepwater Horizon disaster, we need to understand what it takes to clean up spills utilizing chemicals that were created to break down oil. Activity 1: Test tubes 1 & 2: My hypothesis for tube one is that it will not have any change because it does not have the microbial solution, tube two will change color due to the 2 mL Microbial solution along with having tetrazolium. Test tubes 3 & 4: My hypothesis for tube 3 & 4 is that tube four will have a change in the appearance and physical properties because the microbial will break down the oil. Test tube 5 & 6: For test tube 5 I chose to place the test tube in a larger cooler with ice cubes and test tube 6 I placed it out on the front porch that was exposed to the sun for hours during the day.
The purpose of this lab was for students to be able to describe the chemicals nature of oil and how it has a significant effect on the environment. Students learn how water and oil do not

mix. Students was able to observe and break down the general process of microbes use to break down oil. In case there was an oil spill like how it was back in 2010, students and people should know how to quickly clean it up by utilizing chemicals that are meant to break down the oil.
