Before the beginning of the Civil war (1790s to 1861) nations were divided in various
geographical regions. The component of geography used in dividing nations during this period
are human and physical geography. Whereby, human geography in this case covers buildings and
roads while physical geography covers land and climatic factors. In this case, geography became
a vital strategy used in determining the outcome of war since those who are in higher ground
have war advantage than others. Base on this, Abraham Lincoln and his military developed their
war strategy using geography. Key geographical features they considered were long coastline of
southern landscape, Mississippi river system, and Appalachian mountain

. The strategy to control
both the mountain and the river made it easier for them to control supplies to the confederate
forces. This paper therefore, mainly focuses on the role that geography played in dividing the
nation before the start of civil war, 1790 to 1861.
The key roles played by geography in dividing the nation from the Southern and Northern
played various roles. One of the key role played in this case is economic role

. As the nation was
being divided geographical features found in each place form the basis of economic activities
done. For instance, in the Southern United States, the land was fertile and warm climate made it
ideal for large scale farming for crops like cotton and tobacco

. The climatic condition of the
region made people to see no need for industrial development. Most cities in the South were
geographically located along the coastlines and rivers and used to transport agricultural produce
to European market. Additionally, in the North, the climate did not favor plantation farming and
it has many natural resources like iron and copper. The resources lead to establishment of

manufacturing industries in this region and development of railroads and infrastructure
connecting the region hence boosting their economic activities.
Additionally, geography played a vital political role in dividing the nation

. Politically,

. They use geographical
features like union blockade to keep Southern states in getting needed supplies. The military uses
the union naval ships to patrol the offshore waters so as to capture the Confederates merchants’
ships bounded for Europe supplies. The practice made Lincoln to strategies on the need to end
the slavery in the southern states which he eventually accomplishes after winning the presidency.
The slavery has been one of the main factor that facilitates the civil war in the later years.
Moreover, geographical landscape of the Southern states facilitates the war as the nation
divide. The long coastline spread from Virginia to Texas with inlets and harbors. In this case, the
northern armies had to invade the southern so as to defeat the Confederacy who did not invade
the North due to lack of Union territory. The other features are Appalachian and Mississippi
river

. They played a role in dividing and conquering the confederate land. The Northern armies
uses them to divide southern army and block their supplies routes as a war strategy. In this case
therefore, geography play a vital role in war strategy in dividing the nation during the years
In conclusively, it is clear on the roles that geography has played in dividing nation years
before the Civil war. Some of the roles it played are political and economical in nature. The
economic aspect of this role relates to climatic condition and soil in the south and Northern
States of the country which favors economic activities carried out. The political role is related to
