According to our textbook disaster is defined as, “actual or threatened accidental or uncontrollable events that are concentrated in time and space, in which a society, or a relatively self-sufficient subdivision of a society undergoes severe danger, and incurs such losses to its members and physical appurtenances that the social structure is disrupted and the fulfillment of all or some of the essential functions of the society, or its subdivision, is prevented
.”(Fisher, 2008) Disaster can causes significant disruption, damage, destruction, or loss of life, property, or resources, and a disaster can affected community's ability to cope using its own resources. Disasters can be natural, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, or wildfires, or they can be human-made, including industrial accidents, terrorist attacks, or environmental catastrophes. One disaster category are hurricanes which can range from Disaster Category 2 to Disaster Category 9 depending on the location and how prepare a community is for a hurricane. For example Hurricane Katrina will be a Disaster Category 9 because, “While the storm itself did a great deal of damage, its aftermath was catastrophic.”(History.com Editors, 2023) When there’s a hurricane the phases of emergency management include planning, response, recovery, and mitigation. Planning for a hurricane can include creating evacuation plans, getting emergency supplies ready for any type of disaster, and having good communication channels in order to keep the community alert for any disaster. Response can include search and rescue operations, provide emergency shelter, have good medical care for anyone, and restoring essential services like electricity and having clean water available. Recovery include repairing damage infrastructure after a hurricane, helping the community and also businesses with rebuilding efforts, and helping the survivors with any physical and emotional health needs. Mitigation might include building stronger infrastructure, implementing zoning regulations and educating the public about hurricane preparedness. The Structural-Functional theory emphasizes the importance of social structures, institutions, and
norms in shaping individual behavior and maintaining social order, in our textbook it talks about the National Guard how they restore and maintained order and “without this functional use of the
National Guard, the death and injury count may be larger in many disasters.”(Fisher, 2008)
Is important to have a great community, compassion, and unity in times of hardship, Galatians 6:2 states, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”(NIV) We need to support each other during the times of crisis. Preparing for, and also recovering from a hurricane can provide valuable insights into the practical realities of emergency management and the emotional toll of natural disasters
