Lab #5: Troubleshooting Part I – Identifying common problems and solutions
Post all problems and solutions to Canvas by Friday 11/17/2023 at 11:59pm.
This lab is to be worked on either independently or in teams of 2. You can decide
which you prefer. If working in a team,
both members’ names MUST be on the
submitted file and both should submit the Lab reports.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
Using any resources you can locate, including books and websites (and the class
instructor if necessary), identify
three common problems
a user of a Windows PC (any
current generation, last 3-6 years) may experience. These problems may be classic
problems such as the ones discussed in lecture, or could be ones you identify on your
own.
Next, find 1-2 solutions/
approach
es to each of these problems. If necessary, write down
all steps needed for a technical help desk assistant or other IT staff to
diagnose
the
problem, and then
solve
it!
Your answer should be in the form of the following outline…
Problem #1
: Bluetooth devices are not connecting to Windows system.
Approach #1: Device Battery
-
Diagnosis: Attempt to turn on the desired Bluetooth device and see if it has
power.
-
Solution: If the device does not have power, charge the device or replace the
batteries and try again.
Approach #2
:
Windows Troubleshooter
-
Diagnosis: Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter in settings to identify the in-
system problem
-
Solution: If the troubleshooter, identifies the problem, whether it be
disabled in system BIOS, uninstalled Bluetooth card or Bluetooth drives,
the troubleshooter will let the user know. Most times, the proper drivers
are missing in the system. In this case, reboot the system and the OS will
detect and install the drivers.
Problem #2
: PC and applications are unresponsive or slow.
Approach #1: Task Manager
-
Diagnosis: Attempt to open the web browser and make a simple search.
If the result(s) are taking longer than expected (like a minute), then
something is wrong and further action is required.
-
Solution: Open the Task Manager by right clicking the taskbar and
selecting task manager. Then right-click on the applications taking the
most power and click on “end task”.
Approach #2
:
Reboot PC
-
Diagnosis: If the task manager approach is insufficient for speeding up
the PC, and manual is required.
-
Solution: Click on the Windows button, then power, then restart. In a
couple of minutes, the system should be rebooted, and the speeds of the
PC should be back to normal.
Problem #3:
Printer is not connecting to PC or vice versa.
Approach #1
:
Windows Setting
-
Diagnosis: Open Settings, open devices, then printers & scanners. If the
user’s desired printer is not listed on the list of already known locations,
the user has to add the printer to the PC.
-
Solution: Click on the “Add a printer or scanner” button and wait for the
desired printing device to appear on the list of discoverable devices.
Once found, click on the device and connection will be activated and
secured. If device is not found, click “The printer that I want isn’t listed”,
click next and wait for the desired printer to appear. Then follow the
instructions that come after.
Approach #2
:
Control Panel
-
Diagnosis: If the approach of using Windows settings does not help fix
the printer issue, a more in-depth troubleshooting method is required.
-
Solution: Open the Control Panel, “Hardware and Sound”, “Devices and
Printers”, “Add a device”, and wait for your printer to appear on the list.
Click on the device and follow the instructions that follow.

Question 4 of 14 ►
Check My Work
You must evaluate the purchase of a proposed spectrometer for the R&D department. The purchase price of the spectrometer including modifications is
$140,000, and the equipment will be fully depreciated at the time of purchase. The equipment would be sold after 3 years for $32,000. The equipment would
require an $8,000 increase in net operating working capital (spare parts inventory). The project would have no effect on revenues, but it should save the firm
$43,000 per year in before-tax labor costs. The firm's marginal federal-plus-state tax rate is 25%.
a. What is the initial investment outlay for the spectrometer after bonus depreciation is considered, that is, what is the Year 0 project cash flow? Enter your
answer as a positive value.…

Case 11-54 Integrative Case on Chapters 10 and 11; Drawing Conclusion from Missing Data (LO 11-1, 11-3,
11-5)
Your next-door neighbor recently began a new job as assistant controller for Conundrum Corporation. As her first assignment, she
prepared a performance report for January. She was scheduled to present the report to management the next morning, so she
brought it home to review. As the two of you chatted in the backyard, she decided to show you the report she had prepared.
Unfortunately, your dog thought the report was an object to be fetched. The pup made a flying leap and got a firm grip on the report.
After chasing the dog around the block, you managed to wrest the report from its teeth. Needless to say, it was torn to bits. Only
certain data are legible on the report. This information follows:
