Problem 1:
If you own 15,000 shares of stock of Brookfield Asset Management and it pays a dividend of $0.18 per share, then the total dividend you will receive is:
Total Dividend = 15,000 shares * $0.18 per share Total Dividend = $2,700
Problem 2:
If you own 20% of the stock of a company with 10 directors on its board and the company has cumulative voting, you can determine your representation on the board as follows:
Representation with Cumulative Voting = (20% / 100%) * 10 Representation with Cumulative Voting = 2 directors
If the company has straight voting, we would have representation proportional to the ownership, so we would have 20% of the board seats.
Problem 5:
You just purchased a share of Northstar Sports for $100. You expect to receive a dividend of $5 in one year, and you expect the price after the dividend is paid to be $110.
Total Return = ($5 + ($110 - $100)) / $100 Total Return = ($5 + $10) / $100 Total Return = $15 / $100 Total Return = 0.15 or 15%
Dividend Yield = $5 / $100 Dividend Yield = 0.05 or 5%
Capital Gain Rate = (($110 - $100) / $100) * 100 Capital Gain Rate = ($10 / $100) * 100 Capital Gain Rate = 10%
Problem 11:
Krell Industries has a share price of $22.00 today. If Krell is expected to pay a dividend of $0.88 this year and its stock price is expected to grow to $23.54 at the end of the year, you can calculate the dividend yield and equity cost of capital as follows:
Dividend Yield = $0.88 / $22.00 Dividend Yield = 0.04
Equity Cost of Capital = (0.04) + [(($23.54 - $22.00) / $22.00)] Equity Cost of Capital = 0.04 + (0.067) Equity Cost of Capital = 0.107
Problem 13:
Summit Systems just paid an annual dividend of $1.50. If you expect Summit's dividend to grow by 6% per year and the firm's equity cost of capital is 11%, you can calculate the price per share of Summit Systems stock using the Dividend Discount Model (DDM):
Price per Share = $1.50 / (0.11 - 0.06) Price per Share = $1.50 / 0.05 Price per Share = $30.00
