Grade level and subject: 11th Grade - American History Subject: Major Turning Points in American History Unit Length: 4 weeks Educational purpose of portfolio: The purpose of this portfolio is to foster a deeper understanding of key turning points during the birth of America to the present day. This fosters critical thinking in a historical context while understanding and analyzing the long term effects of historical events such as The Revolutionary War, The Civil War/Emancipation Proclamation, The Great Depression/New Deal and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s. It will also highlight students' written ability to analyze and defend their position on different historical events while also attempting to foster a lifetime love of history and education. Written directions provided for your students: This is a 4 week assignment. Every Monday, you will follow the instructions and choose what activities you want to complete. These need to be completed and turned in by 11:59 PM on the following Sunday. You will complete the assignment and turn it in via the link on Google Classroom. With your assignment, you will include a cover page with your name, what assignment was chosen, a brief paragraph on why you chose that assignment and what you took away from the material.. Points will be given for creativity and individuality. Please note: for week three, you will pick one assignment. For grading purposes, you will receive 5 points extra credit for the assignment you did not choose. Please only do one. STUDENT PORTFOLIO 3 Categories and specific items students are to include in their portfolio: Week One: The Revolutionary War Please Choose 1 item from #1 AND 1 item from #2 1. Complete a Venn diagram of democracy/monarchy OR complete a cause/effect of the Boston Tea Party. 2. Create a brief biographical timeline of George Washington OR King George III and turn it in via Google Classroom. You may use what medium you would like (drawing, Powerpoint, video, dance… be creative!) Use at least (1) scholarly source to support your answer. Week Two: The Civil War/Emancipation Proclamation

To support your position, use at least (1) one scholarly source. 2. Review the 13th Amendment Here . - Once reviewed, write an extended answer essay responding to the prompt “how did the 13th amendment and its passing impact the nation and the lives of the former slaves?” Use at least (1) one scholarly source to support your answer. Week Three: The Great Depression/The New Deal Please Choose option 1 OR option 2. Both have links, please be sure to review. 1. Check out the FDR Periodic Table . - Once reviewed, pick a New Deal program and create a Powerpoint presentation outlining the program. Use at least (1) one additional scholarly source to support your project. 2. Review the Library of Congress’ Digital Collection . Pick one photograph from the Great Depression (1929-1939) that resonates with you. - Once a photo is chosen, create a Powerpoint presentation with the photo and answer one of the following questions. Use at least (1) one additional scholarly source to support your answer. 1. What is the historical context of this photo and why is that important? 2. Who are the people in this photograph and what can we learn about them and their surroundings? 3. What emotions or reactions do you think this photo evoked at the time it was taken? Pick two Civil Rights Activists and write a 3-5 page essay analyzing their contributions to the nonviolent movement. Use at least (1) one scholarly source to back up your claims. 2. Research the nonviolent movement and write a 3-5 page essay analyzing and comparing the different types of nonviolent strategies and tactics, such as sit ins and boycotts.
