TOTALS $143,890 $152,870 $5,932 Overall we purchased 8 stocks with the budget provided. When deciding what stocks to buy, I decided to go with consumer brands. Majority of the investments were middle class brands with one luxury brand. I chose to do a conservative approach when selecting the companies to invest in as there was less potential of loss. The total cost of investment was $143,890 with a selling value of $152,870. The investment saw an overall gain of $5,932. AN EXPLANATION OF THE DOW JONES INDUSTRIAL AVERAGE (DJIA) AND ITS COMPARISON TO YOUR PORTFOLIO’S PERFORMANCE Started on 5/26/1896 by Charles Dow and Edward Jones to provide a snapshot of the overall performance of the US economy. The Dow Jones is calculated by adding the stock prices of the 30 companies and then dividing by the divisor. Some companies in the Dow Jones are Apple, Chevron, and Johnson & Johnson.
Figure 2 Figure 3, above, shows how your portfolio performed compared to the overall stock market average (known as the Dow Jones Industrial Average or DJIA) over eight weeks. As you can see, your portfolio generally followed the Dow Jones market average. Your portfolio dipped during week 6 but came back very strong during week 7.
