Teachers can use their recorded observations to learn about their students’ needs or new skills they are gaining. c. Teachers can use their recorded observations to plan curriculum for their students. Find out what their student’s interests are to plan. 2. Many programs try to use authentic assessment to measure children’s progress. Why is a portfolio considered to be a form of authentic assessment? (10pts.) A portfolio is a form of authentic assessment because either the observation is planned or unplanned. Which gives teachers a real accurate observation of the child’s behavior, knowledge and skills during school time. 3. List/describe examples (2 for each) of specific artifacts/evidence that could be used in a portfolio to assess: Motor skills: (3pts. each) 1. Jumping from one hopscotch square to the next hopscotch square 2. Stacking the Legos together to make a tall Lego building Language/literacy skills: (3pts. each) 1. Using mannerisms saying thank you when given their lunch
2. Roleplaying with classmate in dramatic play using the firefighter dress up clothes 4. Why is it important for documented observations to be objective and specific? (10pts) It is important for documented observations to be objective and specific, so that there is a clear picture of what’s happening with the child in the classroom in the observation. 5. Read the following passage and identify the subjective/biased words/phrases with an explanation of why each is an example of bias. (20 points) Spencer has been in a bad mood all day. When he came in, he cried as his mother took off his coat, and he was crabby when she left. He started in the block corner, where he didn’t like the way the kids were building, and he kicked over Emily's tower. When I took him aside, he tried to bite me on the hand; I guess he doesn’t want to be corrected because he’s in a bad mood and is crabby. In the passage, the quotes “ He was crabby”, and “I guess he doesn’t want to be corrected because he’s in a bad mood and is crabby” is biased because the teacher is sharing that he’s crabby and that she guesses he’s not in a good mood instead of taking specific observations of the child, she’s being subjective and expressing her own feelings instead.
