Law Enforcement Courts Corrections SROs are law enforcement officers who are responsible for the safety of students, and to prevent crimes from happening on school property. They also work with school administrators to keep a safe and secure environment. SROs presence on school property helps to prevent trespassers who may cause a direct threat to students and faculty. Communication skills that are important for a school resource officer to have are strong verbal skills, good listening skills, the ability to think critically, and to have patience. Restorative justice focuses on the harm that crime causes, but still holds an offender responsible for their actions by a chance to address the needs of those affected by crimes. Restorative justice fits into the juvenile justice system because it focuses on repairing the harm that was done by the juvenile offender, and to rebuild that juveniles relationship with the victim and society. It also gives victims the chance to come face-to-face with youthful offenders. It offers rehabilitation instead of punishment. A juvenile probation officer is in charge of holding juveniles responsible for their delinquent behavior. They monitor and supervise youths who have been charged with a crime, or those who are delinquent. They prepare and present written reports to the court, programs, and other service providers. They are to make sure that the youths and their parents are complying with any and all recommendations or orders by the court. JPO’s works with law enforcement, juvenile courts, social services, schools, and parents with the main goal to help juveniles become successful, and crime free adults. Having excellent communication skills, mainly listening to, and understanding the needs of the juveniles under their supervision. They must also understand court orders related to monitoring the activities of the juveniles under their supervision. They must have the ability to help juveniles understand what is expected of them by the court during the probation period. The impact of law enforcement decisions related to the school-to-prison pipeline mostly has been negative by punishing students for minor, non-violent offenses such as truancy, minor disagreements with other students, being late to class, and for using cell phones.
