Unit 2 Assignment: Persuasion I believe that all of us can recall learning about pathos, logos, and ethos in elementary or even middle school and how to apply those ideas when utilizing persuasion in any literature, including in a personal, professional, and academic view. We can include pathos in the equation while trying to persuade someone about something personal since pathos "appeals to the emotions and the sympathetic imagination, as well as to beliefs and values." The audience's role in the argument might also be seen to be a component of pathos (Lutzke, J., & Henggeler, M. F. 2009). When the issue is personal, you will use your emotions to support your position by bringing your beliefs and opinions into the discussion. I told my family I was transgender back in the year 2020. Due to my fear and the fact that
my family didn't fully grasp the transgender concept—despite the fact that it went against their religious
beliefs—it was an emotional disaster. In this personal matter, I would be the speaker, my family would be the audience, the text would be my transgender identity, and the purpose would be coming out as transgender in order to be who I truly am. Since I was very young, I have always known who I am. I went back to my early years and gave some evidence that might serve as an illustration of how I have always struggled with my biological gender. I could tell that my family was extremely upset and that they were trying to shut me up. However, after understanding their perspective and realizing that they were going through just as much difficulty as I was, I calmly continued to explain my viewpoint and the difficulties I had been experiencing in order to satisfy them and to reassure them that they had done nothing wrong in the way they had raised me. In order to make my argument clearly, I didn't simply focus on how I felt at the time; I also expressed sympathy for how they must have felt. Later, they took the time to attempt to comprehend my struggles and viewpoints, and over time, they have totally accepted me. Ethos can be implemented from a professional aspect by employing persuasion. “Ethos appeals to the writer’s character. Ethos can also be thought of as the role of the writer in the argument, and how

credible his/her argument is” (Lutzke, J., & Henggeler, M. F. 2009 When a Readiness and Training NCO in
my unit recently suggested that I submit an application for Sergeant rank since I have been in the military for four years and have held the Specialist rank for a considerable amount of time, I immediately
declined because I did not want the additional responsibilities that come with the rank. In this professional setting, I am the audience, my Sergeant is the speaker, and obtaining my Sergeant rank is the subject of the text. The purpose is to persuade me to pursue the position. His statements on why obtaining the rank would be advantageous for my military career in the future naturally held credibility because he is a senior NCO, who is held in high regard and authority for being in for so long. He used his personal experience as a newly promoted Sergeant to persuade me of the respect and benefits that came with the position. Helping lower enlisted soldiers get their jobs done and making it a great and positive working environment is always rewarding, seemed like a pretty great argument to convince me to finally get put on the promoting list. When it comes to an academic writing it differs personal and professional since its used mostly with evidence and more of critical thinking logic. That’s where logos can come into place in the academic matter. “The appeal to logic, means to appeal to the audiences’ sense of reason or logic. To use logos, the author makes clear, logical connections between ideas, and includes the use of facts and statistics” (St. Louis Community College 2021). There was a transgender ban in place when I first joined the military. I prepared an essay discussing the case for allowing transgender people to serve in the military back when I was a senior in high school. In the essay, I am the speaker, and my former teacher is
the target audience. The goal of the text, which argued against the transgender ban, was to explain why transgender people should be allowed to join the military. One of the points I could recall making in my argument was that the ban would be lifted and then reinstated, creating a never-ending cycle when it came to the changes of new leaders, holding the argument that the issue is opinion-based. My second point was that, just like everyone else serving, every soldier is held to the highest standards. There is no

special treatment given to transgender individuals in terms of standards. Transgender service individuals
are held to the exact same rigorous standards as every other service member.
