Developing an Argument for Change CM 220 Unit 4 Assignment Part I: Thesis
Review the Unit 3 reading on thesis statements and identifying the underlying assumption and common ground. You may also want to review the Writing Center’s Writing a Thesis Statement
. What is your thesis statement (claim + reason)?
The community and local elected officials should come together and participate in finding a way to end homelessness in this community and possibly all over because of vulnerability to violence, poor health, and mental health concerns. What is the underlying assumption (major premise) for your thesis? For my thesis statement the underlying assumption would be: Homelessness needs to end because it is a risk to the community and the homeless people themselves.
What common ground do you anticipate that you will share with your audience? The common ground I think that I anticipate sharing with my audience is the fact that, we as a community should care more about the people in the community, young or old more than the way it looks. There are more funds and attention going into the way the community looks than the actual people in the community.
Part II: Rhetorical Situation Review the Unit 1 reading on the rhetorical situation. What is your purpose? How would you describe the problem and what are examples that illustrate the problem? My purpose for talking about homelessness is for one, I used to be homeless at one point in time in my life. I was deathly afraid of being out in those streets by myself, especially at night. I was deathly afraid of getting robbed, raped, killed, or even beat up. No human being should feel
like they have to sleep outside or in a park, or a bathroom stall because they can’t afford to live under a stable roof. These problems that occur with homeless people can be a multitude of things, coming home from the
military and having no family, or losing a job and not being able to know how to bounce-back, having a life crisis happen to you that makes you forget you have to be stable with a roof over your head. There are so many examples as to how I would describe this problem….it could get lengthy.
Describe your audience. How does
the issue affect different community
stakeholders? Who would be Homelessness affects community stakeholders in many different ways, in can cause negative impacts on the community such as:
Homelessness can impact the availability of healthcare resources, increase
the risk of victimization, crime, and other issues, have economic costs for providing services like emergency healthcare, outreach, and law

underrepresented stakeholders? Who can implement your proposed solution? enforcement, contribute to rising inequalities and preventing the growth of sustainable and inclusive cities. The underrepresented stakeholders are the general public. Shelter and homeless service providers, social and other affordable and supportive housing providers, businesses and their associations, and other community organisations can implement my proposed solution.
How would you describe your setting? What are key elements of the setting that affect the problem? My settings are in Norcross , Ga in the area where all types of people live, the area where it's always traffic, and people walking around, driving, coming and going. There’s a Burger King on the corner and it’s a business establishment to the upper left of the Burger King. Across from the Burger King in front is a Chase Bank, and across from the bank is a restaurant called Martin’s, and across the street from that is a Citgo gas station. There
are construction workers in the street in front of the Citgo at the traffic light at the street of Buford Hwy. Part III: The Appeals Review the “
Three Appeals of Argument
” podcast in the Unit 4 reading. Respond in full paragraphs for each of the appeals and include specific examples to illustrate how you will use those appeals. Reference at least one source that you can use to support your claims, and also be sure to identify a particular logical fallacy and how you will avoid it in the logos section. For more on fallacies, review How to Support an Argument and Avoid Logical Fallacies
. How will you use the ethos appeal? How will you ensure
your audience trusts
you? Who might be stakeholders that may have reservations or negative results from the proposed solution? What is at least one rival hypothesis you will need to address and
how can you overcome that challenge to your argument? If I used ethos in my paper it would be in a persuasive way not in a rhetorical. I would get my audience to trust me by talking to them as if they were regular people. Not like they were unintelligent, or can’t comprehend. The only potential stakeholder that may have reservations, or negative results to the solution is the government. The only rival hypothesis I need to address is the fact that the only negative I see could happen is the community continuing to turn their backs on each other and
abandon each other. Not only that, bit continue to treat sex offenders like they aren’t humans too.
How will you use the pathos appeal? What are ways you can connect with your audience? What might be I would use pathos in a persuasive way too. You can connect with your audience in many different ways. One way that is very simple is, just by knowing your audience, meaning, and understanding your audience’s demographic, psychographics, and pain points. Entertain your audience by adding your personality or a certain kind of flair to your message. Tell stories, by turning you personal experiences and knowledge into a story.

specific examples that you could use to illustrate the problem? Feedback, get feedback from your audience by ing them questions make sure they not only comprehend and understand what you're saying. Make
sure you compliment them too. Listen to your audience and refine and define them. Have a presentation that goes with your message, and with a
call to action presentation. And most of all keep eye contact with your audience. How will you use the logos appeal? What evidence supports that this is the best solution? What research will you need to conduct? What is one source you have
found that will help you support your claims? I would use logos in a persuasive and rhetorical way just in case I have some people that don't speak my language. The fact that in order to do anything, even starting off, especially as a group, the first thing anybody involved needs to come together and first and foremost to have a discussion, or even to plan how, where, when, and what they are going to do.I will need to do research on homelessness and how it is a community problem and what needs to be done about it. One source that I found that
could hopefully help me right now and beyond to greater things, is the an ebook called, “Hunger, Poverty, & Causes Impacts and Eradication: Community Assistance and Development Selected Programs and Analysis.”
What is a specific logical fallacy (like a hasty generalization) that you will need to avoid and how do you plan to avoid that fallacy? All of the logical fallacies I will need to avoid for the very community issue that affects almost every community in the United States. I will need to avoid distorted facts, manipulated facts, drawn false conclusions, and anything that distracts you from the issue at hand. I would avoid all of these by keeping solidified facts, DO NOT draw my own or let anyone draw
me or themselves up with any false conclusions, and most important don’t
distract myself nor let anyone distract me from this whole situation or experience period.
