Integrating the use of technology into reading within the classroom setting has become more of a
necessity than a luxury. If I had to choose which of the examples in the reading I related to most it would be that of Laura. Laura has the opportunity to teach in a technology rich environment, as
do I. It then becomes important to teach not only the literary content, but also the literacies that come along with it. In order to develop
digital literacy
, educators must teach students how to verify credible sources. It is important to place emphasis on the five E’s when researching a topic on the internet:
Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate
.
As students apply what they have learned to their own process of conceptualizing questions and exploring to find answers, they will engage in learning that is meaningful, purpose-driven, and marked by intrinsic motivation. (Taft)
When electronic technology is being used to engage students in learning, it is imperative to ensure students have the tools needed in order for them to effectively navigate their electronic sources.
Crucial for the literature classroom, most traditional methods of literary analysis can still be applied to works in these new mediums, meaning that many of the skills students develop by analyzing the new forms of media can also be used to study traditional texts( Prestwickhouse, 2023)
In a primary school classroom, I would integrate the use of technology as an intervention strategy for students who were struggling with reading. Use of technology can assist young
readers in strengthening their skills when it comes to phonemic awareness, pronunciation and blending. Using technology that is interactive as well as educational can be an effective way to remediate reading difficulties often suffered by students of this age.
The use of technology for students of this age can :
Access techniques for reading aloud with expression
Learn to decode words in context
Practice blending to form words
Student fluency may be measured quickly electronically through the use of quick formative assessments.
Use of technology for reading remediation can and has increased reading fluency in my elementary classrooms. DI is reinforced by aligning interactive electronic lessons allowing students to hear the text and then engage with it.
Though some may disagree, the use of technology within the classroom is indeed interactive and can be extremely engaging as well as educational.
