Week 5 Writing Notebook
Refreshing and Adding to your ePortfolio
Each week you will have an opportunity to practice different aspects of the writing process in a writing notebook. It consists of a template you will fill out and submit in Canvas. In addition to introducing and practicing targeted components of the writing process, these notebooks are meant to help you to determine your own strengths and to identify opportunities for growth. This week, the writing notebook focuses on how to build and maintain your ePortfolio so that it is representative of your growing skills and abilities.
Throughout your academic career, you will be building a personal electronic portfolio or “ePortfolio.” The ePortfolio tool will help you track your professional and academic progress. Once you graduate, it can also be used to demonstrate your skills and competencies to potential employers and professional community.
Your ePortfolio will be developed and hosted using Folio, the ePortfolio tool this university uses. As a UAGC student, not only will you have access to Folio during your time at UAGC, but you will retain lifetime unlimited access after leaving the university, without fees or capacity limit.
If you have not yet created your account, see the Setting Up and Using Folio
resource as a guide. STEP ONE: Refreshing Your ePortfolio
Each class you take presents an opportunity to revisit, and refresh, the materials you house
in Folio. That is especially true in this class, as you have developed stronger written communication skills. For example, your ePortfolio includes an Introduction. But your work in this class, including on the Week 1 Discussion Board and your Week 2 Personal-Professional Narrative, has likely sharpened your sense of how you want to present yourself.
1.
What sentences or paragraphs from work you have completed in this course will you include in your ePortfolio Introduction? Why have you chosen the material that you have?
The sentences that I would use for my ePortfolio come from ‘Week 1 – Post Your Introduction’

“My name is Kim, and I am 24 years old. I just had my first son, Dansby, who is four months old, and I am separating from the Air Force to become a stay-at-home mom while completing my education. I am studying for my bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education.” It would be appropriate to use these sentences because they describe my current life and what I hope to achieve.
STEP TWO: Adding to your ePortfolio
Your ePortfolio allows you to upload Projects you have completed, artifacts that are intended demonstrate the skills you have been mastering through the coursework you complete. Again, see the Setting Up and Using Folio
resource as a guide to help you add projects to your Folio. Upon reaching the end of a particular course, it is important to consider which project you might upload as indicative of the work you have completed. In this class, the Future Opportunities essay would serve as an effective ePortfolio piece. When you upload a new project, you will be asked to include a description of your project that summarizes the piece and any conclusions that were drawn, and you will have the opportunity to add skills tags to your work that identify the knowledge, skills, and abilities that are demonstrated. Look ahead at the Future Opportunities Essay prompt as you consider these questions. 1.
What will you use as the project description text for your Future Opportunities essay?
The description of this essay will emphasize the importance of describing my personal ethos and how it led me to where I am today, and what I have learned and improved throughout the five weeks of this course.
2.
Which skills will you use to tag your work? What are your reasons for choosing those skills?
Good essay structure, narrative, APA citations, and descriptive. I chose these because they are the most common elements of my writing in my college courses.
STEP THREE: Review and Reflect
Review your work in this Writing Notebook. What challenges did you face? Are there other areas of your folio that you plan to update? Are there specific skills you most look forward to acquiring in the course to come? In no more than 150 words, please reflect on your work in this activity.
The challenge that I faced with this writing notebook was trying to come up with skills to tag for my essay. The definition of ‘skills’ for that section was not very clear to me, as the skills I often associate with writing are being able to make sure that your main point is clear and concise, as ENG121 Week 5 Writing Notebook

well as making sure you are using proper grammar. So, I just chose specific elements that are normally included in most essays.
