Should Abortion Rights be legal in every state?
In today’s day and age, abortion rights have been a root of heated conversations amongst people. I am a registered nurse and have been able to see the medical reasonings behind the choice, as well as the humans that are just not ready to bring a child into the world and want abortion to be an option for them to consider. There are a lot of different types of abortions like; spontaneous, incomplete, missed, threatened, and induced (MSD Manual Professional Edition, 2020). The option that is at the choice of a person is called induced which is the termination of pregnancy by either medication abortion or in-clinic abortion (Attia, 2019).
Induced abortion is what some states have recently made illegal while the other types of abortions fall under medical complications and is not at the choice of the person carrying the child. I believe that there is a misconception regarding the choice of having an induced abortion. Abortion is a choice that is well thought out as well as traumatic for everyone involved, it is not a swift and easy decision. Having a child is a long-term commitment and if a family is not ready for that they should be able to choose from options including abortion. I believe that induced abortions should be at the mother’s choice because it is her body and her civil right to determine what happens. Allowing abortions to be legal and practiced by trained and qualified providers in safe clinical spaces keeps woman protected from having to seek back door, illicit options to terminate unplanned pregnancies.
Deciding to have a planned pregnancy at any age of your life is a huge decision that is made with usually two partners and a lot of thought goes into this. Some people unfortunately
3
do not have the opportunity to have much thought go into a pregnancy. A lot of debates about induced abortion center around the risk that you take by having unprotected sex and that each party involved knows the outcome and consequence of that decision. While yes this could be true, unfortunately some women are sexually assaulted or in an abusive relationship where they do not have that option of using a contraceptive to prevent the pregnancy. Women that are involved in sexual assault or abusive relationships need that option to have an induced abortion if they become pregnant. In that moment that women do not get to choose what happens to her body and it becomes a very traumatic sexual experience that could result in pregnancy that is unwanted. A child should not have to come into the world due to a sexual assault because the mother does not have access to abortion rights. This will eventually lead to an increased number of suicide rates due to women not having access to induced abortions (WebMD, 2022). Sexual assaults happen so often, and women do not have that choice, but they
should have the choice to terminate a pregnancy that results from those circumstances.
The states that still are legal to practice induced abortions have numerous amounts of reliable clinics that provide medication abortion or in-clinic abortion, as well as the Plan B morning after pill. These clinics are highly trusted and are used for a numerous number of resources besides pregnancy that you can get unbiased information through telephone or consultation in clinic. The states where it is illegal, women and couples are driving to the closest
states to find clinics that can provide these services for them. When abortion rights were illegal before 1973 in certain states and other countries that were completely banned women were seeking abortions in illicit ways. These illicit options resulted in causing long term damage to their reproductive organs and becoming life threatening. Annually over 70,000 women are

dying due to unsafe abortions resulting in the banning of legal rights in certain states (Center for Reproductive Rights, 2004). If induced abortion in legal nationwide and woman have the access to these resources, they will not have to seek out illicit options. Trusted abortion clinics also provide birth control and other family planning resources at little to no cost to women to prevent further unwanted pregnancies down the road. Utilizing these clinics in the end could reduce the number of induced abortions being done each year. If woman do not know about these clinics before becoming pregnant the access to contraceptive is difficult, because a doctor
must be seen to be prescribed contraceptive. To some woman, they do not have the financial needs to make that happen which results in these unwanted pregnancies. If states and the nation made accessing healthcare regarding family planning more accessible and cost-effective,
we all could benefit from this. Abortion numbers could drop which would result in people not talking about it as much and making it such a hot topic for lawmakers. Every human in the world has a right to do numerous things to their bodies. Men have the right to get a vasectomy at any given age (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). Women have options to numerous varieties of birth control as well as the option for a tubal ligation, which can be done at any age (Johnson,2023), and Plan B which is a morning after pill to stop sperm from impregnating. A woman has the right to make any type of decision regarding her own body which is supported under the human rights instruments (Center for Reproductive Rights, 2004). Abortions have been around since the late 1700s and were banned back in the early 1900’s, but
states started slowly making it legal and then eventually abortions were passed nationwide starting in 1973 (Parenthood, 2022).

Religions have different inputs on how they view abortion depending on what you practice and how you grew up. Christianity practices the sixth commandment which states “You
shall not murder” in Exodus 20:13 (Christian Reformed Church, n.d.). Christianity practices that if an abortion is performed any stage of development from point of conception is condemned (CRC, n.d.). One allowable option for abortion is if the mother is threatened and could die from a continuation of pregnancy. Jehovah Witness views on abortion are the same as Christianity and that God views human life at beginning of conception (Jehovah’s Witnesses, n.d.). Additionally, in the bible Matthew 7 talks about do not judging others or you will be judged as well (CRC, n.d.). So, if a person with a religious or no religious belief is getting an induced abortion some of these religions have no right to judge and banish them from their life or look down upon them. Religions have so many scriptures that people follow by so closely but other things like judging that happens so often, and they are considered a sin for but will not take credibility for because they don’t realize it. These people and religions should not get to dictate abortion with the women going threw it when they cannot follow all their own practices. Humans will argue that induced abortion is murder and that there are many people daily that go to jail for murder charges but with abortion they do not. The definition of murder is the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another. The definition of a human is a living person and human being. A fetus does not start developing a heart until week 3 of gestation and it is not a survivable heart until between week 17-20. A viable human must have at least a heart which is not even an organ developing until week 3 of gestation, and a survivable heart is not considered until week 17(Valenti et al., 2011). In abortion clinics the
6
option for induced abortions is only until week 16 of gestation, which falls under the heart development and is an unviable fetus which could not survive (Parenthood, 2022).
People argue that there are so many options that would make abortion unnecessary, and that people choose to not use the resources that are accessible to them for men and women. Women do have options to prevent pregnancy, but they are not all available as people may think they are. Women can have their tubes tied or a hysterectomy to prevent pregnancy and it is stated that it can be done at any time. However, women find that doctors in the end have the choice on performing a procedure. Doctor’s will perform if there is a medical need for a hysterectomy and tubal or have had a certain number of children and do not want anymore (Marks et al., 2022). Healthcare and insurance are expensive during this time, and it is becoming difficult to go to a specialty doctor at a reasonable time. The increase in money and extended times could result in an increase of abortions due to people not having quick access to prevention methods. Abortion clinics have resources to prevent future pregnancies for little to no cost to help and provide convenience of access to encourage prevention of unwanted pregnancies again. Unfortunately, the stigma the world has created on these abortion clinics makes it difficult for the community to see they also provide resources for men and women needing anything regarding their reproductive organs. Overall, abortions should be kept an option across the country for humans to choose whether or not to continue with a pregnancy. Clinics that offer abortions are also such a great tool in helping prevent unwanted pregnancies from happening in the future with the resources they provide. Studies show that 6 out of 10 people that get an abortion in their lifetime either have kids currently or get pregnant down the road (Planned Parenthood, n.d.). Induced
