English Composition I - Task 1
08/07/2023
Knowing how to read and write helps us learn in many different areas, places, and situations. As an administrative assistant with the Houston Police
Department, I use my reading and writing skills to complete my tasks and responsibilities, such as managing records, organizing files, communicating with officers, and preparing police reports. I love and chose this job because I
want to serve my community and support my local law enforcement. However, I soon realized that working as an administrative assistant with the
Houston Police Department was not as simple as I had expected. It required a lot of knowledge, skills, and professionalism that I did not have. Some times when reading and writing helped me to learn in an environment, other than the classroom, was when they helped me overcome new challenges when starting my job as an administrative assistant with the Houston Police Department, and when my Commander asked me to be her assistant which helped me grow professionally.
First, I needed to use my reading and writing skills to learn more about the types of reports and information I was to be dealing with. I started by reading training manuals, guides, and policies that explained the Houston Police Department’s rules and regulations regarding managing personal information and report writing. By reading and analyzing the Houston Police Department’s circulars and General Orders (G.O.), I learned about the different types of information and reports that I was to handle, as well as how to classify, secure, and submit them in accordance with the Houston Police Department’s standard operation procedures. For example, police reports require specific templates, codes, and abbreviations that I had never used before. Using previous reports, along with the feedback from my peers, I learned about the best ways to write reports that were clear and coherent. By using reading and writing to learn in this way, I was able to gain a lot of valuable knowledge and skills that enhanced my performance. I became more confident in handling personal information and writing reports that meet the Houston Police Department’s expectations and standards. I also developed a deeper understanding and respect for the information and officers I worked with, as well as their importance to the Houston Police Department’s vision.
Another way that reading and writing helped me learn outside the classroom environment was when my Commander personally requested that
I be her temporary assistant. Due to my improved report writing, I now had the opportunity to learn another job and use my learned skills in a new position. I used my reading and writing skills to communicate with the office employees, via email or in person, to learn how to draft correspondence, schedule meetings, and file documents, amongst other typical office duties. She applauded my writing and stated she needed someone to permanently fill the position and asked if I would accept. Since improving my writing skills,
many doors have opened for me, and I have been able to achieve many short-term goals that I set for myself. Having my Commander personally choose me to help her with her day-to-day things is a big accomplishment. I was able to show off my skills and in turn, Commander graciously put in a good word when I began looking for upward movement within the department. By using reading and writing in this manner, I was able to learn how to grow professionally by articulating myself, being clear and concise, and effectively communicating with my coworkers.
“The more you read and write, the more you broaden your vocabulary and are able to articulate concepts accurately and more effectively to others.
Increasing your ability to communicate also helps make you a better worker or student.” (
Benefits of Reading & Writing Skills
, n.d.) I personally believe reading and writing are fundamental to personal growth. Humans have been using words, or sounds, since the beginning of man. Without it, we would not
be able to connect to others, create meaningful relationships, or share our memories with each other. Books, magazines, and even music all stem from reading and writing. Imagine a world without music. Sounds pretty boring to me.
In conclusion, reading and writing are powerful ways to learn in any environment. They can help us gain new information, develop new abilities, and find new interests. They can also help us connect with ourselves and others in many different aspects of our lives. My experience of working as an
administrative assistant with the Houston Police Department and getting a promotion are just 2 examples of how reading and writing enriched my life and helped me achieve my goals.
