Task 3
A1. If I am facing difficulty communicating with a parent of an English learner from my classroom, who does not speak English themselves, I would ask for a translator to be present during a meeting. I will acknowledge that there is a language barrier present and a translator is necessary to communicate effectively. The translator would be there as a buffer, not as an additional person to converse with. I will maintain communication with the parent directly, never looking at the translator for reassurance. The parent will understand that I have made all efforts to speak to them about their child’s needs and academic goals. A2. Working with a co-teacher can be a struggle, especially if the co-teacher has never worked with another teacher in the classroom before. One strategy that I would implement in the classroom to foster
a positive and collaborative working relationship would be clearly defined roles and responsibilities in the classroom. Splitting the responsibilities early in the school year can prevent confusion later and ease the work load for both of us in the classroom. This strategy is beneficial to students’ success. Defined roles in the classroom can alleviate misunderstandings and help guide the students in the right direction.
A3. An individual education program, or IEP, is a federal education law under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (Understood 2019). In order to qualify, the child must have a disability in one of 13 categories and need special education to make progress in school. Educators are involved with the pre-referral stage to ensure that the student is placed properly in the program. The IEP is reviewed every twelve months. General education teachers need to be prepared to collaborate in the IEP meetings because they are a part of the IEP team. Accommodations are changes in the classroom that affect how the child learns the material. Teachers are responsible for providing extra time on tests, and seating placement in the room for those students who may need it.
