1-6 Assignment: Writing Notes
The article I selected for my critical analysis project is “Rethinking Work” by Barry Schwartz
. His purpose in the article is to dispute the traditional idea that work is primarily motivated by financial compensation. He highlights the importance of meaningful, engaging work and argues that workers desire jobs that offer more than just a source of income. Schwartz’s purpose is to encourage the idea of reevaluating how work is structured and emphasizing the importance of allowing employees to find purpose and
satisfaction in their work
. Ultimately, this would lead to better job performance and the overall well-being of the employee.
Schwartz provides evidence and examples throughout his article to support his argument. He references a Gallup survey that found nearly 90
percent
of workers were disengaged or actively
disengaging from their jobs, indicating widespread
dissatisfaction with
their jobs
. Case studies such as hospital custodians
, and college
students working as phone solicitors
where the worker found motivation and, a deeper sense of purpose beyond the financial aspects of their job,
demonstrated that people are willing to put more effort into work when their jobs are meaningful and engaging (Schwartz 2). Schwartz also cites research findings that showed workplaces offering
challenging, engaging, and meaningful along with employee discretion, tend to be
more profitable and successful (2). The author gives a historical perspective. He contrasts the
Gilstrap 2
traditional view of work outlined by Adam Smith with contemporary evidence that challenges Smith’s belief that financial compensation is the only thing that motivates people to work (Schwartz 2). The author also highlights personal values in which he says people often value more than just money in their work. They also desire challenging, gratifying work, respect from colleagues and supervisors, and a sense of making a positive impact on others around them (Schwartz 2).
Barry Schwartz’s target audience seems to be a broad readership that includes employers,
employees, and anyone interested in work and job satisfaction. Challenges that author Barry Schwartz may face may include resistance to change, as many people and organizations resist changing traditional views and practices related to work. Another challenge would be employees in diverse workforces may have varying expectations and definitions of meaningful work. It would be challenging to create a solution that satisfies everyone. To conclude my notes, it is evident that Schwartz argues for a fundamental shift in our understanding of work emphasizing the value of meaning, engagement, and personal fulfillment in the workplace. His insights serve as a crucial reminder that traditional views of work are outdated, and that meaningful work can be an influential force for positive change for individuals
and organizations.
