Grace Smith Professor Gregory English Composition 1102 2 - 4 - 2024 Ensuring Equal Educational Opportunities for Students with Disabilities  The American education system has struggled for years to create an inclusive environment for children, especially children with disabilities. From the case Brown vs. Board of Education in 1954, which fought for an equal education for black Americans to Endew F. vs. Douglas county school district in 2017, which fought for availability of a complete IEP to young children with autism, America has tried to give equal opportunities for success, but we are still fighting. Children with disabilities still struggle to have equity in the general education classroom, in sports, and in transitioning out of high school into college. This paper will research the underlining problem for children with disabilities in a classroom, how this problem can be solved to create a better environment that ensures equity ion the classroom, and what the reader can do help change come about. Contreras, Natalie. “On Knocking down the Fence: 4 Ways You Can Improve Equity for Students with Disabilities.” Teach. Learn. Grow. , 22 Dec. 2023, www.nwea.org/blog/2021/on-knocking-down-the-fence-4-ways-you-can-improve-equity- for-students-with-disabilities/   This article talks about how the education system treats children with disabilities as dogs that are trapped behind a fence. The article says that our school system has tried to create an equal opportunity for students with disabilities by passing different laws like No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) in 2004, Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in 2015 and even Individuals with
Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA), but all of these acts failed to remove the fences that prohibit students with disabilities from having an equal opportunity for success. This is a credible source that does an excellent job at explaining where the American education system has failed students with disabilities. The authors had an intended purpose of making known the complications and missed opportunities caused by the education system. The author of this paper is not only writing to educators, but they are also writing to parents and civilians of the education system. This article will be helpful when drafting this paper because it can give extra information about where our school system is lacking. Derbissalova, Gulnaz, et al. “Multimedia Applications in Special Education: New Opportunities for the Developing of Cognitive Processes of Children with Intellectual Disabilities.” Multimedia Tools and Applications: An International Journal , Nov. 2023, pp. 1–15. EBSCOhost , https://doi.org/10.1007/s11042-023-17512-1   (Sinclair) This article explains an experiment that was performed in November of 2023. The author explained the steps of the experiment in this article. The researchers wanted to see if multimedia would help students in special education. They had several children from ages 9-10 help the experiment. The students were not just tested once, but they were also tested at the end of the study to make sure the outcomes were consistent. This is a credible source that I will be using in my paper. I will use it when I discuss the different solutions to the problems in the special education system. Faggella-Luby, Michael N., and Max T. Engel. “Why Inclusion Isn’t Coming, It Is Already Here: Catholic Schools and Inclusive Special Education.” Journal of Catholic Education ,
vol. 23, no. 2, Sept. 2020, pp. 30–54. EBSCOhost , search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx? direct=true&db=eric&AN=EJ1286581&site=eds-live This article is an interesting academic journal that explains why there is already inclusion in education for students with disabilities. The paper talks about how the catholic schools try to live out the gospel in whatever they do, so they are to except and welcome all of God’s Children, whether they have a disability or not. The paper discussed the foundation of the catholic belief, and how it ties to inclusion in the classroom. The writer states that because of what Scripture says, catholic school will practice full inclusion. This credible source will be used when I discuss the opposing side of the argument. The information that was provided was very interesting, and it made me shift my thinking a little. Pratt, Timothy. “The Separate, Unequal Education of Students with Special Needs.” The Hechinger Report , 30 Mar. 2020, hechingerreport.org/georgia-program-children- disabilities-separate-unequal-education/ This article is a very informative piece that discusses the problem of separating students with disabilities from the students that are classified as “normal”. The author takes the point of view of a teacher in their local school district. This teacher trusted the education system with his child that had a disability, but the education system failed to help his son. The author explains that while the separation from the general education classroom was supposed to be temporary, the teacher’s son never returned to the general education classroom, and the separation even effected the child mentally to the point of attempting suicide. The article explains that there are other students that face things like this child, and the Department of Education has a long battle to fight until all children with disabilities have an equal opportunity for success in education. I will

use this credible source when I discuss the underlining problem for children with disabilities in a classroom. Schutz, Michele A., and Hilary E. Travers. “Career Development in Rural Districts: Opportunities and Limitations Regarding Students With Disabilities.” Rural Special Education Quarterly , vol. 42, no. 3, Sept. 2023, pp. 136–51. EBSCOhost , https://doi.org/10.1177/87568705231179939   (Sinclair) The author of this article looked into the opportunities that can be gained or missed based on a rural district school. First the author looked at how the districts handled different parts of a student with disabilities specialized programs. The author looked at the different places a student with disabilities can help in career development, and many other places. This article is a credible source that will help me write my paper. I am not quite sure where I will use it exactly, but I know that it will be greatly used to complete my paper this semester. Thapaliya, Mukti. “Challenges and Opportunities to Implementing Inclusive Education: A Case from Nepal.” SN Social Sciences , vol. 4, no. 1, Jan. 2024. EBSCOhost , https://doi.org/10.1007/s43545-023-00808-2   (Sinclair) This article looks into a case from Nepal that looked into the different opportunities a child with disabilities can have when a school moves toward inclusive education in two public schools. The author looked into two different schools to collect its information, and they looked into different areas that can be impacted, areas such as challenges in the environment, other school challenges, cultural challenges, and economic challenges. The author looked through the perspective of the teachers and other administrative personnel in the separate schools. Although this source is located on a credible site, the fact that administrative personnel were used to determine the
outcomes makes the article questionable. None the less, the article was very well put together, and it covered a lot of ground when discussing this topic. I think that I will use this article in this paper when I write about other schools that unfortunately deal with the same circumstances. “Day 15: Education Inequality.” United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region , 27 July 2022 , changethestory.org/day-15-education-inequality/#:~:text=Nationally%2C%20only %2065%20percent%20of,with%20disabilities%20graduate%20from%20college This article is an informative piece about the sad fact about children with disabilities. The author includes the high school graduation rates of students with disabilities and the college graduation rates. The author's main point was that the American school system is unequal, and the social aspect of school needs to change the way they perceive students with disabilities. The author also explains that even trained teachers and other learning programs are created to prohibit students from an equal education. The article also points out that the certificate of completion will be an obstacle for children with disabilities. This is a credible source that discusses a sad truth for many students with disabilities. This article will be very important when I talk about the different problems in our school system. This article not only shares the American school system’s short comings, but it also discusses where the school system has failed our students in special education. This article contains some very valuable information for my argument toward equity in special education. Vogel, Matthew. “Support for Students with Disabilities as They Head to College.” Edutopia , George Lucas Educational Foundation, 19 Mar. 2021, www.edutopia.org/article/support- students-disabilities-they-head-college
This article explains how students with disabilities can be supported when they are making the hard decision to move from secondary school to post-secondary education. The article references laws such as IDEA ( Individuals with Disabilities Education Act ), the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 section 504, and FERPA (Family Education Rights and Privacy Act) which all describe the accommodations and new legal changes for students in Post-secondary Education. The author describes the importance of self-advocacy and how one can prepare students for self-advocacy. This article is a credible source that will help me describe where many different laws that were enacted fell short for students in special education. The author not only explained the different laws that were made for special education, but it also describes right when the laws ceased to help those students.
