Review of three articles (1)
MacPherson-Krutsky authors 'Three questions to ask yourself next time you see a graph, chart or map' - Boise State News
1. What, if any, types of ethics violations
are discussed or described? A graph presented by members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force showed the cumulative total of tests and not the new tests performed to attempt to support his claim that testing was going up at a rapid rate. Next it showed a graph from “The Rachel Maddow Show” on MSNBC which showed coronavirus cases in the US between Jan. 21 and March 11, but the y axis was unlabeled, and the x axis had time periods between consecutive dates that were uneven. It then mentions how analyzing color, shape size orientation of features, trusting bar charts over pie charts, and analyzing where the data is sourced are all ways to identify falsely presented information. Who is harmed
by these ethical violations? The public is harmed and manipulated by these ethical violations. 2. Would you feel comfortable
following the types of ethical principles or policies described? Yes. Why or Why not? Because they are honest and clearly presented. 3. How does the information provided compare to the information
provided in chapter 2 of the text, Ethics in Technical Communication?
In Presentation of Information in the text it describes how the presentation of information directly influences the audience’s interpretation. 4. What are your overall thoughts
on what the article has taught you about ethics and technical communication? That providing information in an accurate manner is unethical. What challenges might you face in the future regarding ethics? To always provide accurate information, graphs, statistics etc. (2)
Social media influencers and the issue of full disclosure (rte.ie)
1. What, if any, types of ethics violations
are discussed or described? The fire festival is when influencers were funded by advertisers to promote a festival to their audiences and the festival ended up being a total scam. Alternatively social media influencers are consistently paid to advertise products without explicitly expressing they are. This is known as covert marketing. It also talks about providing some disclosure through hashtags, but it still takes minimal work to find. It ends by saying it is in the best interest of consumers, brand owners, and influencers to have full disclosure. Who is harmed
by these ethical violations? The public. More specifically the targeted audience of these influencer ads. 2. Would you feel comfortable
following the types of ethical principles or policies described? Yes. Why or Why not? I think expressing full disclosure is extremely important for building trust from an ethical business perspective.
3. How does the information provided compare to the information
provided in chapter 2 of the text, Ethics in Technical Communication? In the section of the text titled Suppressing Relevant Information, it discusses how leaving out relevant information to pursue a hidden agenda is entirely unethical. This is essentially what social media influencers and brand owners are doing. 4. What are your overall thoughts
on what the article has taught you about ethics and technical communication? I was already pretty aware of brand deals with social media influencers, so this article just reinforced my prior beliefs. What challenges might you face in the future regarding ethics? I don’t
think there is any challenge with expressing full disclosure and wish it was a practice more businesses prioritized over covert advertising. (3)

by these ethical violations? Children, parents, families. 2. Would you feel comfortable
following the types of ethical principles or policies described? Yes. Why or Why not? I think it
’
s absolutely necessary to not allow unsafe products on the market and ensure safer engineering and better testing prior to the release.

3. How does the information provided compare to the information
provided in chapter 2 of the text, Ethics in Technical Communication? This also relates to the Suppressing Relevant Information Section of the text in that the company responsible withheld knowledge that their product was unsafe (arguably prior to its release) and still refrained from recalling it based upon a desire for profit. Also, it mentions in the General Principles section to keep people from harm which was not in any way abided by. 4. What are your overall thoughts
on what the article has taught you about ethics and technical communication? The article showed me that companies need prioritize the safety and wellbeing of their customers over a potential for profit and to do otherwise is inherently unethical. What challenges might you face in the future regarding ethics? I don
’
t think there are any challenges with this as far as its just basic ethical business practice(or at least it should be) to ensure that any product released for consumers by yourself or a company you work for is guaranteed to be safe and has undergone significant periods of testing prior to reaching the market.
